After more than a decade in showbiz, Matteo Guidicelli has already made his mark as an actor, model and singer who also succeeds as a triathlete, jeans designer—and restaurateur.

The 28-year-old Filipino-Italian hottie leads a fascinating life on and off-cam that he graciously shares a slice of with StarStudio.ph, during a recent visit to the family-owned restaurant, Da Gianni Cucina Italiana, in Alabang, Muntinlupa. (They have another restaurant in Cebu, called Trattoria da Gianni.)



Matteo, who was born and raised in his mother Glenna’s hometown, Cebu, recalls some fond memories of his father Gianluca’s home country, Italy. He and his family have spent many and memorable summers in that beautiful European country.

He gets more excited to connect those memories to his experiences while taping the 2016 teleserye Dolce Amore, in which his Giancarlo character grew up together with Liza Soberano’s Serena role in Italy.

Matteo’s sister Giorgia Guidicelli, who manages the family’s restaurant in Alabang and in Cebu, gamely joins the trip down memory lane.

“When we went [in Italy] as kids, we always fought,” she reminisces. “So when we go to museums and stuff, parang we just wasted money, because we just fought the whole time. But now that we’re older, I guess we’re more tolerant with each other.”

Matteo reveals one unforgettable place in Italy where they also shot Dolce Amore: “In Bologna, there’s a nice restaurant called Donnatello. I was always eating there. It’s really good.”

Matteo’s caption for this photo, which was taken in his recent trip to Italy, says a lot about the Italian side in him: “Wine for brunch, lunch, merienda, and dinner.”


He also gushes about the Italian drinking culture and laughs about how he does it even when he’s here in the Philippines.

“Everybody in the afternoon after work, they [Italians] have Aperol Spritz, cocktails,” he says. “Like at 4 or 5 p.m., everybody’s with this wineglass that’s orange and then they’re just chilling there. Then later, they’ll have wine. When I came back to the Philippines, [I drink] Aperol Spritz, so at 4 in the afternoon, lasing na ako.”


Living a la Guidicelli

Growing up, Matteo notes that both Filipino and Italian cultures are basically the same.

“There are many similarities,” he points out. “We’re very religious, kumbaga the Catholic culture is very prominent in both cultures. And the food. Pinoys love eating, Italians love eating. So they blend so much together.”

He also remembers having the same dining experiences with his mother’s side (the Fernans) and his father’s side (the Guidicellis).

“When we go to my other Lola’s house, we eat Filipino food. Our Italian side is always Italian, even the water,” he says, laughing. “We always eat together—breakfast, lunch, dinner. It’s strongly like the Filipino culture. When you go to my Nonno and Nonna’s house, it’s like a place in Italy, because even the table clothing, the smell, everything.”

Giorgia concurs with her brother and describes their place in Cebu as their “little Italy.”

Matteo admits being more Filipino than Italian. “I’ve always felt I was a Cebuano,” he says. “The Italian [side] started to kick in, I think, in high school, especially when our grandparents passed away. That’s when we said ‘You know, we really have to preserve this Italian culture and make them proud.’ That’s why our restaurant in Cebu, Trattoria da Gianni, started four years ago.”


Da Gianni Cucina Italiana is a second home for the Guidicellis

Matteo talks about the backstory of their restaurant in Alabang, Da Gianni Cucina Italiana or Da Gianni, for short: “So, we did this [restaurant] seven months ago. It’s basically to preserve the memories and the experiences our grandparents gave us in the table at home.”



Small wonder then that the cozy dining place is filled with photos and memorabilia of Gianni and Franca, Matteo’s late grandparents whom the whole family lovingly calls Nonno and Nonna (which Matteo also spells as Nono and Nona). The family’s two restaurants were named after Nonno.

Moreover, having something from the restaurant is like reliving a part of the Guidicelli family’s memories. “The menu here is all the stuff we ate growing up,” Matteo says. “When you come into the restaurant, you experience a part of our home.”



The actor-restaurateur takes pride in the fact that Da Gianni serves dishes only made from fresh ingredients and not from “the canned ones you can buy in the grocery.”


Memories of Nonno and Nonna

 “You’re gonna make me cry here,” Matteo jokingly warns as the interview veers towards the lessons he learned from his grandparents. As the first grandson of the Guidicellis, he’s very close to his grandparents.

Standing between Matteo and Giorgia are their Nonno Gianni, also the namesake of the family restaurants in Cebu and in Alabang.


Matteo then goes on talking about his Nonno: “You cannot procrastinate with him. If he tells you to do something, you have to do it right away. Not tomorrow, but today.” He adds that he takes after his grandfather’s discipline and passion. “Nonno was a very passionate guy. Whatever he did, he was very passionate about it.”

The good-natured and fun-loving celebrity observes that like his Nonno, he enjoys being the life of the party: “In a dinner, he was always the first one to finish eating, stand up, and go around the table to talk to people. He was like the entertainer. He was like the ‘good vibes’ of the whole table. Well I guess, the way Nonno likes to talk, likes to interact to people, I enjoyed it, e. I enjoy talking to people.”



On the other hand, Matteo remembers how protective his Nonna could be, from what he’s gathered from his mother and his yaya: “When I was a baby, nobody was allowed to touch me. Kailangan may alcohol bago mahawakan ako. Mga ganyan. So I guess, I’m [also] very protective of my sister.”


Da Gianni is the go-to place for a superb dining experience over at the Westgate Center in Filinvest City Alabang, Muntinlupa. It offers authentic Italian dishes such as pizza, pasta, salad, antipasti, risotto, as well as steaks, and desserts. Everything in the menu is prepared following the Guidicelli family’s recipes. Busy, Busy Matteo

Aside from his family’s restaurants, Matteo has a lot on his plate. For starters, he’s set to launch his 2020 denim jeans collection, which comes on the heels of his hit ripped jeans collaboration with fashion designer Avel Bacudio called Avel X Matteo.

2020 is a set of 20 hand-painted and one-of-a-kind jeans for female and 20 for men (thus the name), and Matteo describes it as “wilder’ because it’s more ripped compared to the first collection. But like the first collection, a percentage of the earnings will be donated to the North Luzon Association for the Blind, which is based in Baguio.

Matteo is also gearing up for a concert, which has become sort of an annual tradition for him. Initially, though, he was hesitant to do it because he had just wrapped up work last August on the primetime TV series, Bagani, also with his Dolce Amore co-stars Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil.

Concertgoers, it’s a date with Matteo and Carlo on November 17, 2018!


As fate would have it, Matteo is having a concert again this year, and with his bosom buddy Carlo Aquino sharing top billing. He recalls how it happened: “My good friend, a producer, approached us and said, ‘Matteo, do you wanna do a show?’ And I said, ‘Huwag muna. I don’t feel it this year.’ Anyway, at the end of the day, we said yes. I love performing with a band, it’s another opportunity to share the same stage with crazy people.”
