It’s been a tough year for everyone, including artists, with the pandemic and the quarantine which was implemented last March. For Karina Bautista and Aljon Mendoza, they, too, were forced to adjust to the ‘new normal’, and had to find ways on how to make the most out of the situation.

Karina and Aljon shared with Starstudio.ph what they have been up to during the quarantine and also talked about their project Ampalaya Chronicles: Labyu He He.

KARINA DURING QUARANTINE

Karina had no choice but to keep up and do things on her own when the enhanced community quarantine was imposed, making life a bit difficult, given the fact that she was practically living on her own, away from her family. “Medyo nakakakaba at first. Pero naka-cope naman ako,” she said.

Kailangan mong mag-grocery at wala ka na palang shampoo the next day.

Apart from purchasing what she needed, she would still check up on her family to make sure they were safe. “Nakakausap ko pa rin sila over the phone or na-vi-video call ko pa rin sila at tinetext ko rin sila,” Karina revealed.

Another person that she keeps in-touch with is her onscreen partner Aljon.

TAKING CARE OF HERSELF

Knowing that pandemic cases continue to spike in the country, Karina does her best to keep healthy and fit. “Nagwo-workout ako at nag-e-exercise ako. And since may sayaw na workshop kami, parang all-in-one na rin yun,” she revealed.

“Kumakain rin ako nang mabuti since wala namang ginagawa. At nagma-mask talaga ako dahil bawal lumabas dito na hindi naka-mask. At naghuhugas ako ng kamay at naliligo after lumabas,” the actress said.

Karina tries to be productive too and keeps the house tidy and in order. And of course, nag-Netflix rin ako.”

For her birthday, she even tried a new arts and craft skill and explained, “Nagscroll ako sa app at may nakita akong gumagawa ng diamond painting. So ayon, na-try ko lang at nag-order ako.”

Karina also shares her birthday, which she celebrated last April 29, was a blast, doing some live social media events during the day, then celebrating later on.

“Naging very productive. Masaya naman, para siyang working birthday. Nung gabi lang, do’n ako nag-celebrate.”

WHAT SHE LEARNED

Having gone through the pandemic season, Karina said that she has learned important things from everything that has happened.

“Parang na-appreciate ko ‘yung mga little things in life na may natutulugan ako, at may nakakain ako everyday. Let’s just help and be kind to one another kasi there’s so much hate in the world and so much things going on.”

“The mere fact na buhay ang mga family members ko at ‘yung mga mahal ko, it made me realize na sobrang mahalaga ‘yan kasi you’’ll never know what might happen next,” she pointed out.

ON HER CAREER

On a lighter note, Karina has something to look forward to, which is the Ampalaya Chronicles: Labyu He He iWant episode, which tackles the intricacies in dating one’s friend.

Karina plays the role of Peng, who is Sol’s best friend. “Ako ay masipag dito, may work, at student din ako. Very brave rin siya at kayang makipagsabayan kahit kanino. Most of all, very mabait siya,” she elaborated.

Fortunately, Karina didn’t struggle that much with adjusting to her character since they were both alike. “Konti lang po ang pagkaiba namin. Mas nakarelate ako sa characer ko kasi si Pen, hardworking rin, mapagmahal siya sa parents niya, strong and independent,” she stated.

However, she still had her apprehension at the beginning, saying, “Hindi natanggal ‘yung pagiging mahirap ‘yung pagka-portray nu’ng character. Kasi off-cam very natural ka lang, tapos ‘pag oncam kelangan kasi mag-project.”

Karina recalled how she prepared for her character and said, “Nagbasa ako ng script talaga. I tried to memorize the lines ahead para pagdating ko doon mas concerned nalang ako kung papa’no i-de-deliver ‘yung lines. And I analyzed the script also kung sino talaga ‘yung character ko, at kung ano ‘yung niraramdaman niya.”

Karina also shared that the moment they were contacted for the project they were overjoyed with the news, but had to go through the screen test after. “Super thankful kami na nangyari ‘to. ‘Yung first time naming nalaman na may iWant project kami nandun ’yung kilig na ‘may iWant project kami!’

“Eto ‘yung parang first big project namin!” she says.

Everything comes with hard work. When it comes to success kailangan mo talaga siyang paghirapan.”

ALJON’S EXPERIENCE

Another celebrity who was startled by the turn of events when the lockdown occurred was Aljon Mendoza. But unlike Karina, he was fortunate enough to have been with his family when everything happened. “Nagulat ako nu’n eh, kasi hindi ko alam kung hanggang kailan tatagal yung community quarantine at halos lahat magsasara,” he said.

Aljon when out of his way to prepare.“I made sure na may pagkain kami sa bahay para hindi na masyadong lumabas.

He added, “Naliligo ako and nag-te-take ng vitamins. Hindi talga kami lumalabas ng bahay.”

FAMILY AND WHAT HE’S BEEN UP TO

With all the panic surrounding the pandemic, Aljon admitted that he was lucky and thankful that he and his family are safe and healthy in Pampanga.

However, being cooped up at home made the actor miss being outdoors. Hence, he posted some throwback pictures of himself travelling.

But from time to time, he would also make the effort to check up on Karina. “Madalas po kaming mag-message at nagka-kamustahan or calls. Araw-araw naman po ‘yun,” he revealed.

POSITIVITY AT ALL TIMES

Despite all the hurdles that the world is facing, Aljon tries to be positive.

He also pointed out, “Gawin din natin ‘yung part natin at maging disiplinado. ‘Wag tayong lumabag sa bawal na gawin. So laging stay at home, pero if ever kailangan lumabas laging mag-mask at mag-social distancing. Dobleng ingat lang tayo. Makakaraos rin tayo dito.”

A REASON FOR EXCITEMENT

When it comes to his career, Aljon is just as happy and thrilled as Karina with their current project. “Nakaka-excite! Sobrang saya naming dalawa at pinaghandaan talaga naming ‘to. Hindi naalis ‘yung pagka excite ko, hanggang ngayon,” he said.

Doon ako nag-alala,” he admitted.

Aljon portrays the role of Sol, who is an only child that has his own shortcomings. “Makulit ako at pasaway.

Just like Karina, Aljon also stressed that he tried to come prepared, even if he found it challenging delivering his lines.

Aljon also looked back during his earlier days and shared what he learned from his struggles.

“‘Yung patience at ‘yung passion dapat nando’n. Oo mahirap siya—so dapat nandoon yung inspiration, motivation at passion mo,” he said, in closing.
