Pinoy Big Brother fans have their eyes pinned on their TVs once again when the country’s longest-running reality show commenced its 8th season, Pinoy Big Brother: Otso. It returned with three batches, and its first batch of housemates and star dreamers inevitably became one of the most talked about. No wonder, it’s got a set of girl and boy teenagers with very interesting backstories.

Four of the male teen housemates of this batch sat with StarStudio.ph team one afternoon, unfolding their inspiring lives.

It’s a well-lived and happy life for Seth Fedelin

Interesting as a word to describe 17-yr old Seth Fedelin’s life is an understatement. As the eldest son among four children, he clearly knows what hard work is because he helps raise the family. His dad tends a swimming pool while his mom is a dedicated housewife in Dasmariñas, Cavite where Seth was born and raised.

Seth evokes an unassuming vibe, can giggle with anyone in the room and has a mysterious smile at times.  Albeit the cheery attitude, Ang Hope-Pool Son ng Cavite shares that he didn’t always have it easy. “Na-stroke si Papa,” he tells about his father who worked abroad. “Dati kasi bago kami magka-swimming pool, siya ‘yong nagtatrabaho, siya ‘yong nagsusustento sa aming magkakapatid, sa pamilya. Tapos nung nangyari ‘yon, nag-iba ‘yong buhay namin. Tapos sobrang lungkot ko, ‘yong dating masiyahin na Papa ko, ngayon nanliliit siya sa sarili niya.”

Eventually, things straightened out for them especially when a swimming pool was leased as a source of their income. When not in school, he helps the family by also working alongside his Daddy Richard: “Kapag walang pasok naman, umaga pa lang, mga 7 AM ‘pag gising, didiretso ako sa pool. Tapos tinutulungan ko si Papa. Kung ano ‘yung ginagawa ni Papa, ganoon din [ang ginagawa ko].”

Seth continues to help his family, but now, it’s while reaching his own dreams. He shares the exact prayer he offered before he went to his last callback for PBB: “‘Yung huling sabak ko, dumaan ako ng Baclaran. Nagsindi ako ng kandila, sabi ko ‘Lord, kung [para] sa akin ‘to, maraming salamat. Kung hindi, Lord, salamat kasi ang saya ng experience ko.’”

Shortly after PBB, he worked with Kadenang Ginto lead actress Beauty Gonzales for the iWant movie “Abandoned” and he’s set to join the cast of the teleserye Kadenang Ginto. He knows that this is just the beginning of reaching his dream and he’s now on his way.

Ali Abinal: Once a fighter, always a fighter

Ali Abinal is literally a “fighter” since he was young.  The 16-year old moreno describes himself before entering Kuya’s house as a “fighter” for his dad in Mixed Martial Arts competitions, who teaches the sport for a living.

Ang Astig Makisig ng Las Piñas was actually born in Quezon City before residing in Las Piñas and has five siblings.

On a typical day, he goes to school and then works out in the gym or trains with his dad. He has two words to describe his life in general, “nakakaiyak” and “masaya” but he chooses to focus on the latter and remarks: “Pero gusto ko ‘yung masaya lang ‘eh.”

Only a few people know that Ali’s first audition as a PBB Housemate was for PBB 737. “First time ko nag-audition ako nung 12 years old ako,” he shares that the audition day was interestingly a day before he turns a year older.  “Akala [ko] ipapa-birthday sa akin ‘yon. Umuwi akong first level, talo na. Umuwi ako pinanood ko sila sa TV.”

Apparently, “giving up” was never in Ali’s vocabulary. He auditioned again with his Mom and endured a lot of long travels from the south metro to the north, for PBB: Otso. “Nangutang na po siya, para may pamasahe kami sa auditions,” he persisted and he was driven by his Mom’s sacrifices just to make it. “Lagi niyang sinasabi, ‘Galingan mo anak ha’.”

Before and after PBB, Ali has one goal for his family. “Ang gusto ko lang naman sa family ko ay mabilhan sila ng sariling bahay, kasi po ‘yong lola ko [ang] may-ari ng bahay. Actually, no’ng bata pa lang po ako may issue na kami na gusto kami palayasin ng lola ko, kasi hindi niya support ang Mama at Papa ko,” he says. “Meron kaming maliit na room. Doon kami minsan sa lapag.”

With these experiences as motivation, he continues to fight for this dream no matter what with lessons in life in his back pocket: “Maging patient, obedient. At kahit na tingin mo sa sarili mo marami ka nang alam, dapat talaga nakikinig ka pa rin. Still, dapat alam mo pa rin kung paano makinig.”

Kurt Gerona is more than just a Bohol Gwapito

He was born in the city of Pagadian in Zamboanga. He is an only child, which was became a struggle for him especially when his mom and dad got annulled. Now that he’s older, he considers that phase in his life as a learning. “’Yon ‘yong one of the reasons kung bakit nabuo ‘yong pagkatao ko ngayon," he smiles. "Pinatawad ko ‘yong Dad ko, pinatawad ko ‘yong sarili ko. ‘Yon, hindi ko akalaing mas magiging okay ang lahat."

Pinoy Big Brother for Kurt was a dream come true that he never thought would happen.

“It has always been my dream to be an actor. Pero joining PBB wasn’t really my plan,” he laughs about how spontaneous his audition for PBB was.

"Sobrang epic ng story ng pag-o-audition ko, kasi supposedly, hindi talaga ako mag-o-audition, pumunta ako sa mall para manood ng sine. And then ‘yong handler ko, nakita ko. Parang hinila niya ako doon, agad-agad, ‘Magfill-up ka diyan, kasi mag-o-audition ka. Mag-o-audition ka sa ayaw at sa gusto mo, nakausap ko na ‘yung Mom ko, etc.’ Napa-audition po ako thinking it would be fun and experience ko ‘tong bagay na ‘to.”

Though he didn’t make it to be an official housemate, Kurt feels nothing short but grateful that he was included in the roster of Star Dreamers. He keeps in his heart an important mantra on perseverance and determination. “Practice makes things perfect,” he suddenly comes up with his life’s metaphor with a smile. “Hindi naman po ako na-le-left behind, sadyang hindi lang ako nagta-top. Not just in school and academics, but also in life po.”

Kurt is such a cutie, isn’t he?

Josh Worsley Is About to Carve a Name for Himself

At first glance, one will want to ask 12-year old Josh Worsley if he’s starred in any commercials before. He would smile and say yes, he modeled for a famous milk brand when he was younger. It’s not surprising as he effortlessly carries a charming aura and irresistibly cute features.

Little Prince of Davao was born in Dubai. The Worsley family migrated to the Philippines when he was “around 3-5 years old”. His British father and pure Filipina mother raised him in the beautiful island of Samal in Davao.

“The best thing about my childhood is when we went to the Philippines,” he shares some fond memories of his childhood. “I heard about these Filipino games. The kids are teaching me how to do patintero.”

When he was asked if he really wanted to be an actor, there was no hesitation in his answers. “Oo naman,” he states firmly. “I wanted to actually be like my mom. Kasi, before, she joined Tawag ng Tanghalan in [It’s] Showtime. I also wanted to be like her, but not singing. But on TV. I saw this Star Hunt audition, she told me, ‘Josh, you should join Star Hunt auditions’ so I did.”

Josh finally made it as one of the first official housemates but was also the first to be evicted. Even in a short span of time, he brought some lessons with him to the outside world.

“When I was in Kuya’s house, kasi I was very selfish that I keep on getting milk, some more food, and something like that. I didn’t get to think of others,” he narrates.  “So when I left Kuya’s house, I watched the videos, I said, ‘I was just thinking about myself, not others’. So, I will never forget that and I learned from it po. Also, he is set to make his dreams come true, with his singer-mom as his inspiration.”

Were you also charmed by Josh? We can’t blame you!
