Editor’s Note: Since she was young, Maris Racal loved singing and playing the guitar. Sitting down with ABS-CBN Lifestyle, she explains how her passion for music (and a coincidental heartache) influenced her to not just perform songs, but try her hand writing them.
I started writing songs in my second year of showbiz. Nag-e-emote ako one time kasi super painful ang heartbreak ko and gusto ko syang ilabas. I grabbed my guitar, nag-play ako ng chords, and then may mga phrases na lumabas. Pero hindi ko siya pinilit. Sinulat ko kung ano yung na-feel ko at that moment. Na-realize ko na marunong pala ako magsulat. It was my first original song.
Hindi siya na-release, but ni-play ko siya sa One Music. Sobrang nagustuhan ng mga fans ko; parang hindi ko daw first time magsulat. Sa tingin nila, meron syang chorus, verses, right phrasing, right number of syllables na tama sa isang tono, and chord progression.
Even so, I stopped writing for a while. I had no inquiries na magka-album. Hindi ako na-ask na, “Mag-album ka” o “Mag-concert ka.” I felt like it was not for me and hindi ko sya masaydong sineryoso. I actually thought being an actress was my path. I only started writing again noong naka-love team ko si Iñigo Pascual kasi mahilig din siya magsulat. By then, may nagask sa akin kung gusto kong mag-album. Sabi ko, “Game! Pwede puro original ko?” Na-timing din na ang dami kong nasulat. Yun yung start ng music career ko.
What influences me to write these days? There are a lot of artists that release beautiful songs—some I wish I composed! One is "Thank You" by Dido. Another is "Samson" by Regina Spektor.
I plan to release one album this year, probably by late 2019 or early 2020 kasi ang daming projects na aabangan. I don’t want my fans to be confused kung ano talaga yung image ko. I have a lot of movies coming out and may teleserye pa. Yun muna ang focus ko.
When I’m ready to get back into music, mag-re-release ako ng pop songs. When I’m older though, i-re-release ko all of my songs na mas classic, calm, and chill. Marami na akong nasulat na hindi pang-bagets. Siguro pag right timing and pag may focus ako talaga sa music, I’ll really push through with it.
But I still write. Meron akong kinakatakutan na if hindi na ako makasulat ulit and hindi na-pa-practice yung mind ko, it will make me rusty. If mag-stop ako to the point na mawala sa akin yung music, and I want go back to it…mahirap. So I make sure na may mga bagong songs na isusulat ko every week. Hindi ko muna sya i-release. Keep ko lang for myself as exercises.
