By Bianca Gonzalez-Intal as told to ABS-CBN Lifestyle (Editor’s note: Bianca and JC just celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary last December 4 and have been together in a relationship since 2011.)
Some couples might agree that sustaining the connection between a married couple can be hard especially if you have a newborn. I remember our pre-Cana seminar where they advised that your husband must come first; but when you have a newborn, that’s practically impossible because the newborn definitely comes first! I’m thankful to have a husband who understands that. Here in the Philippines, we're used to the kids sleeping with the parents in the same bed. But ever since my kids were born, they've slept in their own rooms, and JC and I sleep separately. This is one tip that I got from my older brother JC. He and my sister-in-law share that at the end of the day, at least we still have time na kami lang dalawa. Growing apart is one fear of mine, seeing it happen in other cases, where the kids become all grown up and you as a couple grow apart eventually, too. Ayoko mangyari yun!
I do have one big insecurity as wife—my lack of cooking skills! Feeling ko may pagkukulang ako kasi I don’t know how to cook! I can follow a recipe, sure, but hindi ko sya hilig. I can’t whip up a meal in 10 minutes like other women do. I always think of it as my biggest lack as a wife, against many Filipinas who are the best at cooking. I can do household chores, but because of the nature of my work—and in Philippine culture, we have house help—I don’t do it on a daily basis. I have much to improve on as a wife, that’s for sure. JC is the man of the house, takes care of everything that needs to be done, especially the bills. If they say the mother is the light of the home, my husband is definitely the rock of our family.
I’d like to think I’m quite chill and supportive as a wife. JC recently got into riding motorcycles, which had me thinking, “Okay, if that makes you happy, go for it.” JC is also very supportive of whatever it is that I want to do. We’re very, very much the same! When we met, he already knew that I was so much into my career, and that our schedules are quite full. But we do love finding common time so we can travel with the kids together. We differ a lot in terms of personality, but somehow we complement each other.
