Heraclio Basilio was called "Eros" by those who knew him well. He graduated from the University of Sto. Tomas and was already an artist people noticed at the time. Winning 32 awards including a certificate of merit from the Art association of the Philippines in 1975, Eros did more than just impress his peers. He received the university’s prestigious Benavides Outstanding Achievement Award in 1976 and the Alumni Art Achievement Award in 1981.
He was also dubbed the “logo master” for his commissioned work for well known brands like the following: Ayala Center, Adobo Magazine, Isuzu Crosswind, SMX Convention Center, One E-Com Center, Ballet Philippines, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Globe Handyphone, San Mig Light Beer, Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation and many more. He was also once the Creative Director for design at McCann Erickson Philippines, a top multinational advertising agency.
Come 2010, Eros left advertising to once again embrace painting—his first love. His painting style involves a mix of cubism and figurative realism, using wash techniques to achieve colour transparency in his brushstrokes. Renaissance and Gothic architecture are also depicted in some of his works. Later on, he tried integrating female figures as his subjects. Primarily in acrylic, the distinctness of his paintings can be seen through his trademark colors of ‘Burnt Umber’ and ‘Hooker’s Green.’ Eros draws inspiration from artists Michael Cheval, Cladio Bravo, Cesar Legaspi, and Vicente Manansala.
Eros held three consecutive solo exhibitions at Ayala’s Artist Space from 2011 to 2013. He also had a two-man show with fellow artist and college friend Jose Tence Ruiz in 2014 at Kaida Gallery. He was currently preparing for his 4th solo show but sadly, Eros passed away last January 2017 at the age of 60. To honor him and his artistry Eros' former teammates from McCann-Erickson partnered with his only daughter, Camille Basilio, to organize and produce this auction-exhibit. Here at the exhibit entitled "Eros: Exeunt" his art is showcased one last time, including his recent works still unseen by the public.
EROS: EXEUNT, runs from July 22-27, 2017 at Nova Gallery, Warehouse 12A, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Don Chino Roces Ave., Makati City. You may also visit www.erosbasilio.com to get a preview of his works.
