“Totoo ba yan? Kaya pala natin punuin ang Araneta.”
These were Filipino rock band Kamikazee frontman Jay Contreras’ words after entering the Smart Araneta Coliseum stage with 15,000 fans waiting for them to perform one last time before they go on an indefinite hiatus. Little did they expect that thousands of Filipinos would spend time on a weeknight to see them one last time on stage. Accompanied by bands like Queso, Chicosci, and Urbandub, Jay and the rest of his band gave their all in their Huling Sayaw concert held on December 10.
All throughout the night, Jay interacted with their fans, giving high fives, hugs, and even bottled water to them in between performances. Also, he took time to thank fans on their show of support and their understanding on why they have decided to go on an indefinite hiatus [READ: Why is Kamikazee disbanding?]
While it is hard to accept that they are calling it quits, one must keep in mind that they are also people with families, hopes and dreams. We need to understand that they are walking away from the thing they love the most so that they could spend time with their respective families, and enjoy life outside of the rock and roll life. It won’t be easy but their music will always be with us. While we are not sure if they would come back, 15 years is long enough to inspire and move thousands of fans through their passion for music.
