Staying Fit In The Time Of Covid

Today's times are undeniably unprecedented as the COVID-19 pandemic not only affected the health of millions of people worldwide but also changed our way of living—from requiring ourselves to wear protective equipment when going out to working from home.

Along with these changes is how we maintain our wellness amid the health crisis. With social distancing protocols in place, people opt to stay indoors while others became more cautious in heading outside to keep their active lifestyle.

Despite these, people should not hesitate to remain physically and mentally fit as there are many ways to do so while coping with today's times.

1. Eat a healthy diet and don't forget the fluids

One of the fool-proof ways to observe wellness is by eating a well-balanced diet. Make sure to incorporate sufficient amounts of protein, healthy fat, fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates. Make sure to control your serving portions to avoid overeating. Also, never forget your fluid intake, especially water, as it helps remove waste, maintain our metabolism, and for circulation. Stay hydrated by drinking approximately 2 to 3 liters of water each day. Taking health supplements can be a plus to boost our immune system.

2. Observe proper sleeping habits

Staying physically and mentally fit is correlated with good sleeping habits. Sleep is the best way to rest after a hectic day from work or to recuperate after a rigorous workout. Aside from the advised 7 to 9 hours of sleep, create a sleeping schedule for your body clock to adapt to and practice calming activities, such as reading a book, listening to music, among others, to improve one's sleeping regimen. Avoid using gadgets like smartphones or laptops at night as it is the source of blue light, which could disrupt our sleep and strain our eyes, causing discomfort.

3. Take meaningful breaks

To avoid stress build-up, always make sure to take a breather. Not only does it sharpen our minds but it also keeps one's body in optimal shape. Examples of good breaks are listening to music, playing games, taking a short walk, incorporating breathing exercises, and meditation.

4. Avoid vices

Vices, such as smoking and excessive drinking, can compromise one's health, especially during a pandemic. When one's immune system weakens, it becomes more susceptible to the virus.

5. Practice fitness routines even at home

To keep your body kicking and full of energy, exercise is always key. Even in the comfort of our own homes, we can do simple warm-up routines to liven up our senses. We can begin our day with simple stretching exercises. Even without gym equipment, we can still do rigorous workouts with the help of makeshift items, such as water-filled gallon bottles, a backpack full of books, a small sack of rice or pet food, and more. Running remains one of the best ways to ensure our wellness, and we can do it with a treadmill or even jogging in place. There are also guides online to help ensure the effectiveness of our at-home workout.

6. Enjoy online fitness activities such as a virtual run and more

We can also participate in online fitness activities not only to exercise our body but also to connect with others amid the pandemic. Among the popular online events are training sessions on videoconference apps and a virtual marathon.

Participants are also encouraged join ABS-CBN Foundation's Sagip Kapamilya Tulong-tulong sa Pag-ahon campaign with its 100 Steps Challenge happening on December 6 to help victims of the recent typhoon.

They can simply post a video of themselves completing 100 steps, with the hashtag #100Hakbang1Pamilya on social media. The first 300 runners to complete the challenge will receive a commemorative shirt. Meanwhile, SKY will donate to ABS-CBN Foundation's Sagip Kapamilya Tulong-tulong sa Pag-ahon on behalf of all participants who joined the 100 Steps Challenge.

The RUNRIO Trilogy is the country's premier running series designed for runners who want to complete a marathon via a progression running program. In progression running, participants run at a slower pace until their speed and distance gradually increase at each virtual leg.
