Hot Stuff: Sharon Cuneta Defends ABS-CBN, Raises Over PHP 2 Million In Digital Concert

At her first major digital concert last Sunday staged for ABS-CBN Foundation's "Pantawid ng Pag-ibig" beneficiaries, Sharon Cuneta implored concerned authorities to reconsider the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN as the network finds itself beset with issues that have forced its May 5 closure.

“Maawa po kayo sa ilan pong libong empleyado ng ABS-CBN. Wala pong nilabag na batas ang aming network, kaya ibalik niyo na po kami, para niyo na pong awa,” Cuneta said to end “Sharon: Love and Music, A Mother’s Day Special” that had many engaged it had raised P2,000,977.38.

With the nation still in crisis brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, Cuneta made sure she used her voice—in both literal and figurative ways—at the concert to send messages of hope and gratitude.

The Megastar, repertoire-wise, drew fans and moms alike into a musical treat. She sang her hit songs “Mr. DJ,” “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko,” and “Maging Sino Ka Man” that have marked her four decades in the business, and then did lovely renditions of “Pangako Sa’yo,” “May Bukas Pa,” and “Kung Kailangan Mo Ako,” to further turn it into a nostalgic night.

In between numbers throughout the show, Cuneta was generous in thanking Filipino medical experts who have been helping in the battle against COVID-19 and likewise the unsung frontliners such as street sweepers and food delivery riders selflessly working through these troubled times.

Lahat po kayo, you’re all frontliners. Lahat po kayo are putting your lives on the line for us that’s why this is the least we can do for you,” she said. “And doctors, and everyone in the medical profession, I pray for you guys. We all pray for you every single day. Know that we really hold you in the highest regard and nagpapasalamat po kami sa inyo.”

Cuneta's concert, done at a makeshift space at home, saw Louie Ocampo as musical director and daughter Frankie Pangilinan as technical director.

Days before the concert, the Megastar has previously taken her moments of grief to Instagram on the deaths of her loved ones—including Former Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr., famed director Peque Gallaga, and her sister Leonida "Nedy" Cuneta Valdez.

Cuneta has been one of the biggest celebrities pledging for those whose living and livelihood COVID-19 has affected. She has previously donated PHP 1 million to Bantay Bata 163 at  Regine Velasquez' own fundraising concert last April, and PHP 3 million to Angel Locsin’s campaign catering to frontliners.
