Cheat Sheet: How To Still Be Zero-Waste Amid The Pandemic

Lauren Singer, founder of Package Free Shop and CEO of The Simply Co., made headlines for fitting five years of waste in a single mason jar. But in recent weeks, even she has struggled to keep her trash that minimal.

The 28-year-old New Yorker admitted in her interview with Miley Cyrus' IGTV show Bright Minded that she’s had to compromise some of her long-standing values because of the the pandemic. She went so far as to dissuade people from starting a full-on zero-waste lifestyle now. What’s more important, she says, is to stay healthy and indoors.

What she does encourage, however, is trying out sustainable habits. When you’re just starting your zero-waste journey, little things can still make a large impact. Among her first recommendations are opting to make DIY toiletries like deodorant or toothpaste, both of which she covered in her vlog Trash Is For Tossers.

For frequent travelers like Miley, controlling waste where they can makes for easy wins. One of the most convenient ways is opting for reusable utensils and containers instead of single use variants.
