From its signature stripes to iconic shoe silhouettes, Onitsuka Tiger stands out. In this ABS-CBN Lifestyle exclusive, we flew all the way to Singapore to see first-hand all the cool things they’ve come up with for their Spring/Summer 2020 collection.
Once again, the Japanese heritage brand masterfully infuses sportswear-inspired fashion into this line. The shoes are comfortable yet trendy. The clothes display just enough athleticism to be worn on the streets. Though sporty in design, Onitsuka Tiger remains a premium brand that bridges quality design and the best Japanese craftsmanship. Adding to the distinction of the S/S ’20 season is how the entire collection draws primary inspiration from the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
With that, here are some of the great bits that happened at Onitsuka Tiger’s S/S ’20 preview:
1. Hands-on experience with the new Spring/Summer ’20 Olympics-Inspired pieces
From the shoes up, the influence of Spring is especially evident in its color choices. Spoiler alert: They’re a lot of fun hues like highlighter yellow, neon orange, pink, and indigo. No monochrome here!
You could say the overall looks were active wear reimagined. Picture a basketball mesh uniform in dress form, climbing-inspired denim cargo pants, a diving suit as a knit pullover, and satin dress inspired by a boxing robe. “The designs mimic sporty uniforms that exude more fashion than actual sports uniforms,” the Onitsuka Tiger representatives say. They are also point out that the collection isn’t intended to be worn during actual physical activity. “We wanted to emphasize that we are a fashion brand not a sports brand,” they add.
2. Trying on new shoes for the season
The shoe designs are just as varied as the clothes. From bright yellows and multi-colored pairs to statement black and whites, its sneakers, boots, and platforms are given a kick of energy unlike anything we’ve seen before.
3. The First-Ever Non-Striped Shoe
If there’s one thing we love about our pair of Onitsukas, it’s that they’re instantly recognizable. But when they introduced its first non-logolized shoe, we were (surprisingly!) all for it. Even without a big, trademark logo on the sides, they look like Onitsukas and feel like Onitsukas. A hallmark achievement, indeed. of a steadfast brand!
4. The accessories are always incredibly cool
Matching vinyl hats and bags are all the rage in the accessories arena. Whether in blue, red, yellow, or black, wear them as is or together for maximum impact. Apart from setting trends themselves, take it from Onitsuka Tiger to be up to speed with existing global fashion trends. The hats are equal parts trendy and classic worthy of more moments out of your closet. Pro tip: The main thrust of the collection is to wear them your way.
5. We styled our own looks!
We played with the clothes rack and came up with outfits that are equally hip and on trend. With the premium they give to the pieces, it’s easier to put together a look that seems expensive for a steal. Take this neon puffer jacket—a standout as it is, pair with a scuba-inspired skirt and you’re all set! For a luxurious take on sportswear, this oversized knit tennis jumper should be your new go-to.
6. We caught up with DJ Push of Thailand
We saw him in last season’s Downtown Rave party in Bangkok and we caught up again with Thai actor Push Puttichai Kasetsin. Sporting a key look from the Fall/Winter ’19 collection, he also tried on new pieces from the press preview.
7. An intimate dinner with the Regional team and guests
What’s an event without an after-party? The Singapore team of the brand hosted a welcome dinner at Michelin-star restaurant [email protected] Over bubblies and a custom fusion Italian-Japanese set menu, regional Key Opinion Leaders, press, and local teams interacted among each other mingled all throughout the night. Everyone got to take home, a “super special” limited edition white teddy bag as well!
8. Your fave local influencers were there!
Decked in matching Onitsuka Tiger jacket and sweatpants, (from left) Chinchin Obcena, Andrei King, and Ida Anduyan represented the Philippines among other ones from Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Decked in the brand’s newest collaboration with Japanese menswear brand sulvam, the KOLs sported their favorite pair of Onitsuka Tiger, each one sure brought his and her own personality to the look.
The press preview was at The Luxe Art Museum in Singapore on Dec 4, 2019. All pieces will be available soon on OnitsukaTiger.com and worldwide.
