ABS-CBN Lifestyle Asks: What Real-Life Titas Are NOT—According To The ‘Call Me Tita’ Cast

What happens when you put Cherry Pie Picache, Agot Isidro, Mylene Dizon, Joanna Ampil, Lorna Tolentino, and Angelica Panganiban in one show? You get real-life friends coming together for the first time to give #TitasOfManila due representation on screen. The five actresses star in the upcoming iWant original series Call Me Tita. Directed by Andoy Ranay, they play spirited friends making the most out of their age while grappling with their individual secrets.

ABS-CBN Lifestyle recently learned the cast's thoughts on Tita-hood at their press conference last August,  sharing their personal experiences including running jokes and cold hard truths. Titas, they all agreed, for instance, can’t drink as much alcohol as they used to (something that Angelica and Joanna more so know). Cherry Pie and Agot recognized the need to be more health-concsious. Lorna could go on about hot flashes because, to her, #thestruggleisreal. Meanwhile, Mylene admitted loving brunches.

But there are things that they believed are relatively unfair assumptions about Titas. Joanna has long identified as a Tita; although it’s a label she proudly embraces, she recognized that others might not. “Alam mo ba, I’ve been a Tita since I was 10 years old. I’m a lola na nga also,” she quipped. “Pag-think ng mga tao na mahirap maging Tita, it’s not at all!”

Angelica observed that Titas are perceived as less fun than their younger counterparts. “May misconception kasi na kapag Tita ka na, pwede ka na maging boring. ‘Ay nako, Tita na yan. Maaga nang umuuwi’, ‘Nako, Tita na yan. Di na yan sasama sa’tin,’ she cited.

What she did find exciting (inspiring, even) is the maturity that came with reaching Tita age. It helps her make smarter choices in her day to day. "Iba na talaga yung mga pananaw mo sa buhay. Parang ang Tita may responsibility. Para kang nanay; pag tinawag kang ‘Tita,’ pangalawang nanay ka na. Kailangan kong maging responsible. Ang sarap na Tita ako kasi di na ako nagpapabaya sa buhay ko.  Natutulog ako ng maaga, gigising ako ng maaga para sa trabaho ko and ang sarap na ganoon. Yan ung mga naturo saakin ng mga Tita (ko). Na-inspire ako dahil ganoon sila,” she explained while referring to her co-stars.

Lorna seconded Angelica's thoughts. "Yung maturity na iniisip nila (ay) parang masyadong nagiging nanay na nanay or lolang lola na, pero meron kasing age bracket talaga for Titas," she argued.

Cherry Pie added that it’s wrong to assume Titas are incapable of learning new things. “Yung misconception na boring is the misconception na pag Tita ka na di ka na pwede gumawa ng mga bagay bagay. Yun na nga at this age you can always start to play guitar, to paint, tapos (pwede kang) maging adventurous. Iba kasi nga may connotation na 'pag Tita na dapat nagpapahinga na,” she lamented.

She also clarified that just because women like her have reached a certain point in their lives doesn’t mean they have it all figured out. “Diba pag Tita ka na perfect ka lahat ng gagawin mo? No. You can still commit mistakes and learn more,” she stated.

Agot agreed with Cherry Pie in that Titas can do as they please, especially if they can afford it. “Kung gusto nila magpaayos ng mukha, edi magpapaayos sila ng mukha! Kung gusto nila, mag travel mag tatravel sila,” she said. “You have all the choices in the world! Yung mga Tita ngayon eh because they’ve accepted themselves at a certain ano nga status na ganun na sila.”

And the one thing Mylene wanted to correct? “We are not desperate,” she declared. “Sa lahat ng bagay—hindi lang sa love life, sa sex life, sa buhay, sa career, (at) sa asawa. No. We have choices and we can choose and we are capable of pursuing whatever it is that we want to do. We are not locked in one kahon.”
