We all know people who are incredibly selfish. There are really those who don’t consider anything else apart from their comfort and won't lift a finger unless they're going to directly benefit from it. While we agree that you should stay as far as you can from these people, best believe that it is also good for you to be selfish every once and awhile.
Here are the times when it’s totally okay to put yourself above all else.
1. When you need to take a break
There are times when the only thing holding you in a bad situation or relationship is yourself. If you feel like you are not getting anything out of where you are, keep in mind that you are always free to pull yourself out and to create a safe distance from whatever is hurting you. Give yourself all the time and healing space that you need whenever you feel like it.
2. When you've been selfless for too long
The problem with being selfless is that you can always be taken advantage of. When you are in a company of those who can’t grasp the concept of give-and-take, you might want to reconsider your circle. When in doubt, ask yourself, “Will these people stick around even when I am no longer of use to them?” If your answer is no, then maybe it’s time to stop exhausting yourself over people who won’t do the same for you.
3. When you have nothing left to give
The truth is, taking care of other people requires energy. No matter how good your intentions are, you are really bound to get tired when you constantly put other people before you. Keep in mind that you can’t give what you don’t have. So when you are starting to struggle within you, choose yourself as long as you are not stepping on someone else's toes. That’s perfectly fine. Everyone deserves a down-time, especially you.
While thinking only about yourself may be difficult, sometimes the only way for you to be whole again is to be a little selfish.
