In Focus: Beyond Just Voting, Here's How You Can Incite Change According To Pia Wurtzbach

The national midterm elections reminded us to do our part in making the Philippines a better place to live in, but as we dream of getting there, it’s not easy to figure out where to start with others questioning our age, power, and financial means. However, for Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach—whose philanthropic work centers on HIV/AIDS awareness, women empowerment, and gender equality—even the little things can touch people’s lives in a way as long as they’re done out of the goodness of your heart. Wondering how you can make a difference? Here are some ideas from the beauty queen herself!

Volunteer. “You don’t have to donate a certain amount or try to come up with the goods to donate. It doesn’t have to be like that. It can be just like one more person—like a helping hand,” Pia told ABS-CBN Lifestyle. “You can help out, repack relief goods, distribute school supplies, and many other things. Yung mga volunteer work, wala namang mga requirement diyan. All you need to allot is your time. That’s something you can always do for free.”

Support a cause that’s close to your heart. “Choose it not because it’s the ‘in’ thing now but because gusto mo talaga,” the actress stressed. “Try to make it personal. Make it close to your heart so then you don’t feel like it’s a job. It won't feel like an effort because it’s something you can enjoy.”

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach will lead a benefit gala along with current Miss Universe Catriona Gray on June 4. Visit Miss Universe Philippines on Facebook and Instagram to know more.

Get your friends involved. “For example, ako, I want to work on HIV/AIDS awareness and I want to volunteer but I don’t know anybody from that community center. Para mabawasan yung hiya, why don’t you bring along your friends so when you get there, you won’t feel like you’re the new one or the odd one out?” suggested Pia. “Get other people with you involved para mas masaya and you’re able to reach more people.”
