No Time for Your Children? Ever-Busy Pokwang Shows How to Stay Close to Them

Mothers today may not be seen just staying at home but also choose to work for a living as they take care of their children. However, time with their children is compromised. Pokwang, who has an only child, daughter Ria Mae, is also experiencing that because of her busy schedule as an actress-comedienne.

“Nagkikita nalang kami bago ako matulog, pupunta lang ako sa room niya maggu-good night tapos pagkagising ko, wala na siya, pumunta na sa school. Weekend nalang talaga kami may time mag-bonding," she said.

For many years, that was her setup with her daughter. Being a single mother, she had no choice but to work hard for a living. But through those years, she was able to manage a close relationship with her. Whether you are a working mom, single parent, or soon-to-be-a-parent, you can learn from her simple words of wisdom.

Be strict but not too much

“Ang mga bata ngayon, kapag hinigpitan mo, magrerebelde. Pag niluwagan mo, ganun din.”

An iron fist does not always raise a well-behaved child. Most of the time, it leaves a negative effect, fear or trauma which will result to distance and detachment.

It’s okay to be strict and have rules to establish authority. But anything in excess is will produce stress.

Make time for your kids

“Kahit anong busy natin, make sure na kahit tatlo o apat na oras kada araw… Kahit isang beses isang linggo, ibigay natin sa kanila.”

Time is one of the most precious gifts that you can give to anyone, especially your loved ones. Why? Because it is something you can’t take back or pay.

Spending time with your kids will let you know them more, what they do, who they are with, and will give you a chance to strengthen your relationship.

Communicate with them

Communication is a two-way process. It involves not just talking but also listening. Make them feel as if you’re their friend who is willing to listen to them, accept who they are, and forgive them for what they have done.

“Kailangan i-barkada natin sila para hindi sila naglilihim sa’tin… Iparamdam natin sa kanila na ‘nandito ako, wag kang matakot.’"
