In Focus: BTS' Milestones That Prove They're The Real Global Reps Of K-Pop

They started from the bottom, and now BTS is here soaring as global figures, breaking records, and making history back and forth. From gaining a huge fan following as South Korea's rookie group in 2013, the seven-piece group has surged into popularity across the globe. There's no other way to phrase this: BTS is today's biggest boy band.

In the past couple of years, the Bangtan Boys saw a lot of firsts in their career ladder including recognition and achievements outside the Korean music scene. In case you're living under a rock or just struggling to keep up with so much going on with the poster children of K-pop, here's a roundup of BTS' international milestones so far.

1. American music charts

A common misconception about BTS is that they're only a product of ARMYs' social media work, and this needs to be resolved. The truth is, their music alone could have brought them to where they are now. Case in point: "DNA" entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the highest-charting song for a K-pop group and Love Yourself: Tear and Love Yourself: Answer topped the Billboard 200, making BTS the first pop act with two number one albums in less than a year since One Direction.

2. US television debuts

These musical wins became their ticket to get invited not once but multiple times in US programs like The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live, America's Got Talent, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Good Morning America, and The Graham Norton Show—all with BTS as the first K-Pop act to do so. They're also slated to guest Saturday Night Live on April 13 which is an astounding feat all on its own.

3. Western collaborations

Non-Korean artists also saw BTS' full potential and tapped our beloved boys for musical collaborations. We have DJ-Producer Steve Aoki who has teamed up thrice with BTS in "MIC Drop Remix" (alongside Desiigner,) "The Truth Untold," and "Waste It On Me", The Chainsmokers for "Best of Me," and Nicki Minaj for a remixed version of "IDOL." Let's not forget their stage performance with Charlie Puth at the 2018 MBC Plus x Genie Music Awards!

4. Billboard Music Awards

BTS has made their name stood out in more ways than you can imagine. In 2016, they got their first nod and victory as Top Social Artist at the BBMAs, putting Justin Bieber's six-year winning streak to an end which, again, is a first for a K-pop group. They also took home the award the following year. This 2019, besides the social category, it got bigger with their historical Top Duo/Group nomination!

5. American Music Awards

BTS also had the honor of performing their hit single "DNA" at the 2017 American Music Awards where they were introduced by pals and collaborators The Chainsmokers. And by 2018, they were able to snag the Favorite Social Artist award!

6. Guinness World Records

Their AMA performance earned them a spot in the 2018 edition of the Guinness World Records for having the most Twitter engagement for a music group!

7. RIAA Recognition

The prestigious Recording Industry Association of America awarded BTS with certifications when Love Yourself: Answer went gold, "MIC Drop" remix went platinum, and "DNA", "Fake Love," and "IDOL" achieved gold status. BTS, again, is the first K-pop act to receive five separate certifications.

8. Grammys

Suga, you want it? You got it. BTS got to walk the Grammys red carpet and present an award to Fil-Am singer H.E.R at the 2019 Grammy Awards ceremony. Not to mention, their album Love Yourself: Tear scored a nomination for the Recording Package category.

9. Sold-out shows

There's nothing new about a K-pop group selling out concerts. But BTS holds the prestige of being the first South Korean musicians to stage shows at New York's Citi Field stadium with fans buying tickets out in under 20 minutes. Last month, they announced additional stadium tour stops around the world!

10. Time Magazine

Yep, there's more. BTS got featured in Time Magazine's cover in October last year and was named among the "Next Generation Leaders" for their continuous impact around the world. Prior to that, the K-pop group joined the likes of Kanye West and Rihanna in the publication's list of "25 Most Influential People on the Internet."

11. Big screen

We knew it's only a matter of time until BTS gives fans a big screen experience of their music just like any other superstar. Last year, their Burn The Stage: The Movie hit theaters and got declared as the highest grossing music documentary with only limited screenings worldwide. The power of ARMYs!

12. United Nations

BTS made a historical attendance at the UN's 73rd General Assembly and delivered an empowering six-minute, full-English speech courtesy of leader RM. This proves that they're not only K-pop idols but also strong role models of the youth. We stan!

All of BTS' global accomplishments prove that they have taken K-pop to the next level. But what makes us ARMYs even prouder is how they remain as the same Bangtan Boys we all knew from 2013—humble, talented, and always pouring their hearts out even when nobody is watching. Here's to more milestones with RM, Suga, V, Jin, J-Hope, Jungkook, and Jimin!
