UAAP Season 81 was certainly a milestone to be remembered forever for the UP Fighting Maroons Men’s Basketball Team. After three long decades of consistent efforts in securing a slot to the Final Four, they have finally made it. The team’s motivation and perseverance did not just wow the UP community alone but also amazed the rest of the crowd, even those who were from the rival schools.
Looking back on their journey, the Maroons have come a long way–from being in the lowest of ranks through the years, to finally competing for the championship title in 2018. Although the odds were not in their favor, the UPMBT still won the hearts of many. With their Team Captain’s never-give-up character and the famous “Atin ‘To!” attitude and the rest of the members of this ever-hardworking team, this win is undoubtedly theirs and no one else’s–a story which has inspired everyone since day one, a tale that is kept being told until now.
This year, Nowhere To Go But UP (NTGBU), a group of UP alumni volunteers, proudly announces the publication of a coffee table book that wants to paint a clearer picture of how the UP Fighting Maroons began this exciting journey and to tell the story behind this motivational rise.
Sports journalist Naveen Ganglani was chosen to write the said book. Despite being a Green Archer, Ganglani has been there for the team, their humble beginnings as he started covering the UP Fighting Maroons and the UAAP since 2009.
Ganglani shares how thankful he is for being handed with the opportunity to write an inspiring story as such. "As an outsider looking in, I hope to convey how the story of a rival school is incredibly inspiring, even to those who do not bleed maroon. I hope to do justice to their story by writing an accurate, comprehensive, well-researched book that will answer many questions about the rise of the Maroons," he added.
This coffee table book will be a compilation of stories covering the highs and victories of the team as they continuously work their way up, and as well as the lows and their struggles. In addition, this chronicle would also like to present multiple perspectives, coming from various people such as the coaches, several UP alumni, who have been a significant part of the team’s journey.
As the team’s coach, Bo Perasol highlights, the UP Maroons is indeed a work in progress, as they continue to write their own story of hope and inspire everyone to never stop believing in reaching for their dreams–this and more in the UP Fighting Maroons Men’s Basketball Team coffee table book.
