Hot Stuff: Your Fave Local Acts Just Recorded Their Covers Of These 6 OPM Classics

There's no doubt that the local music scene is currently peaking, thanks to the surge of extra talented acts who are defining what contemporary Filipino music is all about. Whether it's through live experience or streaming platforms, this generation's artists are more "out there" and easily accessible to their growing fanbase.

OPM's domination is no myth. On the leading music streaming app Spotify, more and more OPM content has hit the number one spot of the country’s top 50 charts since 2015, with the likes of IV of Spades, Ben&Ben, and Moira Dela Torre consistently claiming the top ranks. On January 1, 2019, it was also reported that Spotify's OPM content has received nearly 10 billion streams globally!

But as much as we all love the fresh new music that comes with the popularity of these homegrown acts, we also enjoy looking back at some of the most iconic sounds we've heard in the OPM sphere. “At Spotify, we realize that helping you discover new music wasn’t enough: we wanted to have a hand in celebrating OPM content of the past and the present," says Chee Meng, Tan, Head of Artist and Label Marketing, Spotify, Southeast Asia. And with that, Spotify is bringing us Spotify Jams: OPM Love Songs, a campaign where our favorite local acts were given the chance to record their own versions of their selected homegrown classic.

Find out which artists have been tapped by Spotify and which tracks they'll be covering under the OPM flagship playlist, Tatak Pinoy!

1. Moira Dela Torre

Moira was the highest streamed female artist on Spotify last year, so it's only fitting that she joins the chosen ones in bringing this OPM campaign to life. And her selected piece? It's none other than Rey Valera's heartwarming tune "Naaalala Ka" which is one of the first tracks to be released on February 8.

2. juan karlos

Behind the smash hit "Buwan", juan karlos, a four-piece band with frontman JK Labajo, is slated to charm us with their rough-around-the-edges yet distinctly captivating take on "Ikaw Ang Aking Mahal" by VST & Company. Watch out for its release on February 8 under the Tatak Pinoy playlist!

3. Silent Sanctuary

Known for their heartfelt alternative sound, Silent Sanctuary has always been a staple in the local band scene. And for Spotify Jams, this five-membered crew is giving us a more tender version of Regine Velasquez's "Pangako" on the 14th!

4. Ben&Ben

Band of the moment Ben&Ben has been topping charts with their hugot-friendly tracks such as "Kathang-Isip" and "Maybe The Night". And we just can't wait to hear their signature folksy sound breathe new life to the classic Jose Mari Chan song "Beautiful Girl" which will surely melt our hearts come February 22!

5. IV OF SPADES

Fresh from their debut album release, IV OF SPADES is unstoppable from making their mark in the music scene. This time around, Zild, Blaster, and Badjao will be lending their ingenuity to the Rivermaya track "Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo" which will hit the Tatak Pinoy playlist on February 22.

6. Sarah Geronimo

Rounding up the creme dela creme of this generation's league of contemporary artists is none other than pop royalty Sarah Geronimo. While her chosen classic tune is still top secret, be sure to get your feels ready on Valentine's Day for its release!

These brand new additions to the Tatak Pinoy playlist will surely be a thrilling treat to every OPM fan. Which track are you most excited to put on repeat?
