It’s half-past five in the morning, and while most people have already banked a good amount of sleep by this hour, MayMay Entrata has just come back to Manila from an out-of-town trip and is already on her way to another one with our crew. She has little to no rest, as it seems, only dropping by her place to freshen up in between. She hops into our van dressed comfortably in a pink fleecy jacket with a stuffed toy in hand, looking like she’s ready to catch as much sleep as she can in our two-hour drive to Tagaytay. After our shoot, she’ll head straight back to Manila for another scheduled commitment that night. Work-wise, MayMay, as we all know, is many things rolled into one–she’s an actress, a performer, and a model in her own right. But the encompassing fact is that MayMay, above all else, is a hustler.
In the past couple of years since she emerged from the dream factory known as the Pinoy Big Brother house, MayMay has been unstoppable when it comes to ticking the items off her bucket list. Last November, she took on a major feat and appeared on the runways of Arab Fashion Week as the muse of Dubai-based Filipino designer Furne One for his 25th anniversary collection.
Despite having already cultivated a relationship with the couture designer prior to the show (she wore a custom Amato piece in last year’s ABS-CBN Ball,) MayMay reveals that she had to audition first before nabbing the prestige of walking on an international catwalk. A week after trying out through video chat and corresponding back and forth, MayMay found out that she booked the job.
In preparation for this milestone in her career, MayMay shares that she watched online videos to learn how to walk like an international model. Even when she landed on Dubai, she kept practicing, and when the day of the show arrived, she claims, “Masasabi kong hindi ako kinabahan nun kasi prepared ako.”
When MayMay stepped on the runway donning Furne One’s exquisitely designed creation, a calming realization washed over her. “Bumalik ‘yung mga pagsubok ko sa buhay, ‘yung time na hindi pa ako naniniwala sa kung anong meron ako,” she shares. “Habang naglalakad ako at naririnig kong pinapalakpakan ako ng mga tao, sobrang worth it na lumaban ako at hindi ako sumuko.”
After being turned down multiple times (she tried out for other reality shows and various seasons of PBB before finally making it into the Teen Edition of Lucky 7,) it’s clear that MayMay put up a great fight in securing her spot in show business. At 21, she’s at the precipice of her career and never forgets to count her blessings.
Aside from her international modeling debut, another highlight from MayMay’s 2018 was her role in the comedy film Fantastica. Of course, a Metro Manila Film Festival run wouldn’t be complete without an entry top-billed by Vice Ganda along with an all-star cast. From her fellow young stars Edward Barber, Kisses Delavin, and Donny Pangilinan to seasoned actors Richard Gutierrez and Dingdong Dantes, being lined up among the big leagues in the industry makes MayMay all the more proud of where is at the moment. "Feeling ko sobrang blessed ako na ang dami-daming taong nangangarap na kung sa anong position ko ngayon, tapos ako 'yung nabigyan ng opportunity na maranasan 'to."
Throughout the day, MayMay hasn’t shown a single sign of exhaustion despite running on minimum sleep. She’s just as effervescent as always, frolicking under the soft daylight in dainty dresses and showing off her candid charm in front of the camera. There’s no doubt that her joy at work springs from the way she values every little thing that she experiences in her career.
Charged with a vision to achieve her goals for her family, MayMay is getting more and more determined to reach bigger heights. But while her head is turned to the skies, her feet are firmly planted on the ground. No matter where her career has taken her, she is still that bright-eyed girl raised in Cagayan de Oro. “Punong puno pa rin ako ng pangarap,” says MayMay. “Dati, gusto kong makapagtapos ng pag-aaral at mag-abroad para matulungan ang pamilya ko. Ngayon, dumating ‘yung ibang way para matupad ko ‘yung plano na ‘yun kaya mas naging madali.” And for that, our darling angel couldn’t be any more thankful.
In our eyes, MayMay deserves it all. With her humble character and persistent passion, she's only set for an even brighter path ahead. But aside from taking care of the people she loves the most, what is MayMay Entrata's personal goal as an artist? "Gusto kong mas maging malawak 'yung isipan ko sa buhay, na mas maging wise ako, at ma-enhance yung craft ko dito sa showbiz," she confides. MayMay may be on an exhilarating ride at the moment, but she acknowledges that there's so much more to learn and experience. Perhaps, the best is still yet to come for this trailblazing sweetheart.
