There's no doubt that the amount of popularity that K-pop has achieved these past few years is not a joke. It's safe to say that this music genre is turning into a complete global phenomenon, slowly but surely. After hit K-pop boy group BTS took the international scene by storm, it looks like girl group BLACKPINK is following their footsteps this year!
With over 600,000 tweets by fans, BLACKPINK recently trended on Twitter worldwide after Coachella released their full lineup! Our favorite girl group is set to perform on April 12 and April 19, joining other global acts including Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and The 1975. BLINKs are brimming with joy because BLACKPINK is the first ever K-pop girl group to perform at the music festival which is held annualy in Indio, California. According to Coachella's founder, Paul Tollett, he went to South Korea to personally invite them to perform at Coachella. Considering that they just debuted last 2016, this is considered to be a historic feat for the whole K-pop industry!
We're so proud of our girls, and to show our love for them even more, we listed down some of their biggest achievements that show that they're about to dominate the world!
1. They've become a prominent group since debut.
After all the teaser images, song participations, collaborations, and advertisements of the members, BLACKPINK finally debuted on August 8, 2016, with their first lead single "Whistle" which was produced by Teddy Park and Future Bounce, and second lead single "Boombayah" with music video directed by Seo Hyun-seung. The two title tracks reached number one and two respectively on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. Plus, the "Boombayah" music video became the most-viewed debut music video by a Korean act! They won first place in Inkigayo just 13 days after their debut, making them the fastest-winning girl group after their debut.
2. They already performed in a Japanese stadium.
It's safe to say that besides South Korea, Japan is the second country that K-pop idols prioritize when it comes to their concerts. That's why Japanese domes or stadiums like Nissan and Tokyo Dome are widely known in the K-pop industry. With the capacity of usually over 30,000 to 72,000 people, performing in a Japanese stadium has always been a goal for K-pop groups. That's why when it was announced that BLACKPINK would be performing in Kyocera Osaka Dome on December 24 last year, they became the front covers of Japanese media outlets because the Kyocera Osaka Dome is the fifth largest stadium in Japan which can accomodate 50,000 people. Along with this, they also reported that BLACKPINK is currently the K-pop girl group to hold a concert in a Japanese stadium!
3. They are the fastest K-pop group to reach 500 million views on YouTube.
On June 15, BLACKPINK finally released their debut EP titled "Square Up", with four songs entitled "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”, "Forever Young", "Really", and "See You Later." Their single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” debuted at number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with 12.4 million U.S. streams and 7,000 downloads sold which made them the highest-charting K-pop girl group ever. Subsequently, the track also peaked at number one on all digital and downloadable music charts. In just five months, nine days, and 22 hours after its release, BLACKPINK's “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” music video has reached 500 million views on YouTube, making them the fastest K-pop group to do so!
4. They collaborated with superstar Dua Lipa.
It was just last May 2018 when fans went crazy after English singer and songwriter Dua Lipa posted a photo of her with BLACKPINK members Jennie and Lisa after her concert in Seoul. Everyone immediately commented that they should have a collaboration—and what fans want, they will get. After a few months, Dua released her repackaged debut album "Dua Lipa: Complete Edition" with the track "Kiss and Make Up" featuring BLACKPINK. Even without promotion, this song became a hit among mainstream audience. Due to the song's undeniable catchy tune, it debuted at number 36 in the Official UK Charts which made the group the first K-pop girl group to debut in the UK Top 40!
5. They're about to embark on their first world tour.
Starting on January 11, BLACKPINK is slated to tour all over the world with the BLACKPINK 2019 WORLD TOUR: IN YOUR AREA! Although they haven't announce some of the countries that they'll be visiting yet, the Asian stops have been confirmed confirmed including Bangkok, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, and of course, in Manila which will be held on February 2! We have to admit that it's quite impressive for a two-year-old group to have a world tour which proves that BLACKPINK has already reached peak stardom! It's not about how long they worked hard; it's about their improvement and the amount of times they proved that they're ready for bigger and better things in their career.
We're sure that these girls have worked ten times harder even before they debuted, and that's why we're so proud of how far they've come. 2019 is BLACKPINK's year, and we're claiming it! The only question left is: when are we getting a full-length album? We're looking at you, YG!
