In Focus: Miss Spain Angela Ponce Is A Woman And No One Can Tell Us Otherwise

The wild buzz of the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant comes with a consequence. The pageant’s popularity puts each of the contestants under a public microscope—under the judging eyes of society. We all saw a contender who took too much of the stone that the society threw and made a castle out of it. Spain’s delegate to the Miss Universe pageant, Angela Ponce, as beautiful as she is, received massive backlash from netizens across the globe who attacked her identity.

She is beautiful, smart, driven, and a proud trans woman.

For those who are not aware of the term, a transgender person is someone assigned a different sex at birth than what they comfortably identify with. It's obviously different from a gay man who is a person born male, identifies as male but has sexual and/or romantic attraction with the same sex. Cis woman, on the other hand, are those women who are born female and identify as female.

With that said, Angela identifies as a woman. She is a woman. Regardless if someone is a trans woman or cis woman, she should be treated and respected as an equal. Angela isn’t the first one to attempt to get the crown. Back in 2012, Canada’s Jenna Talackova urged the then owner of the Miss Universe Organization and now US President Donald Trump and the Miss Universe Canada Organization to end its ban on transgender contestants joining the pageant. She fell short in winning as Miss Universe Canada, but her fight started a spark. And now, Spain’s delegate Angela Ponce reignited that flame and trailblazed her path towards the Miss Universe stage. She became the first ever trans woman to ever join the prestigious Miss Universe pageant.

Angela is living her truth.

It pains to see people invalidating Angela and how she identifies because of something she doesn’t have control over. Seeing people, especially Filipinos and our even those belonging in the LGBTQ community with internalized transphobia is disappointing to say the least. It is unjust. What they are showing is the polar opposite of what a community should be like. They must have forgotten that the LGBTQ community enjoys the freedom that they have right now because of Marsha P. Johnson, a transwoman and an activist who pioneered the Stonewall riots that led to gay liberation in the 60s.

Thankfully, transwomen can be anything they want to be whether a teacher, a mother, a doctor, a politician, and, now, a Miss Universe candidate. The MUO is a company run by women for women, built on a foundation of inclusion and continues to be a celebration of diversity. Angela is now a symbol as the first trans woman to ever step foot on the grandest pageant stage of our time. She inspires us to keep fighting for the equal rights of our trans siblings saying, “I always say: having a vagina didn’t transform me into a woman.”

During the pageant, Miss Universe touched the hearts of many by paying tribute to Angela Ponce as the very first transgender contestant, recognizing that she has it all, but still her path to the crown and in life hasn’t been easy. She might have failed taking the crown this time, but she sure captivated millions during her run in the pageant.

She closed the tribute by walking down the stage one more time, showing more pride than ever because she is no longer just representing her country; she is also raising the flag for the trans community. “I don’t need to win Miss Universe, I only need to be here,” she tearfully shared.

Angela Ponce was born with the heart of a woman. She is a woman. And no one can tell us otherwise.
