Tonight, November 28, 2018, history has been made as the UP Fighting Maroons head to the UAAP Season 81 Men's Basketball championship games after beating the Adamson Soaring Falcons. In an intense match, the game ended with a final score of 89-87 after a heart-pounding overtime.
The entire UP community is celebrating this win as the Fighting Maroons vie for a historic claim to the crown. Here, we list the reasons why #AtinTwo is a massive feat that has woken the fire in every Isko's heart. UP, Fight!
1. In a sellout crowd of 20,000 filled to general admission, you would expect a sea of blue and green. But no, one half of the crowd is a university more known for filling the stands during the cheerdance competition than for their basketball prowess. Today, that has changed as the UP community came in full support for their Fighting Maroons at the Araneta Coliseum.
2. A Final Four appearance 21 years in the making, and today, they punch a ticket to the finals after 32 years. The UP Fighting Maroons have arrived, and boy, what an entrance it was!
3. It's the #BattleOfKatipunan as UP faces Ateneo in the championship. But their schools' proximity to each other isn't their only connection. In case you didn't know, the upcoming showdown between the Katipunan neighbors has history, too. Bo Perasol, a former Fighting Maroon himself back in the '90s, used to coach the blue Eagles from 2013 to 2016. The hot-handed De Liano brothers were Ateneo players as well. Today, they stand toe to toe with the defending champions and their former home.
4. Atin to: the famous words of UP talisman Paul Desiderio is now the theme of the whole UP community. From Baguio, Clark, Diliman, Manila, Los Baños, Tacloban, Cebu, to Mindanao–one battle cry literally echoes throughout the nation. And what better way to close out his last year than fulfilling his claim for the glory of his university?
It’s true what they say: UP started from the bottom, and now they’re here. But the fight is not over. A head-to-head with the defending champions Ateneo Blue Eagles await. But who would have thought at the beginning of the season that we would see a Blue and Maroon Finals? The Fighting Maroons have arrived, and whatever happens from today, truly there is nowhere to go but UP.
