The biggest open-robotics platform robot Olympiad will be staged in the Philippines for the first time as it hosts the 20th International Robot Olympiad on December 15-19, 2018 at the Sports Pavilion of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, Alabang, Muntinlupa City, Philippines.
The committee envisions a grander and bigger IRO than ever before. A total of 10 game categories will be played on by the various delegates coming from the 38 member countries of the Olympiad. The games are Creative Category, Robot in Movie, Robot Gathering, Mission Challenge, Robot Farming, Emergency Rescue, Energy Saving, Town Watch, Tag-Out, and Humanoid Archery Robot.
Contenders are grouped into two divisions. The Junior Division is reserved for children 12 years old and below. The Challenge Division is for participants from 13 to 18 years old. In both divisions and in all the games, all participants are tasked to build and assemble their robots and program an Artificial intelligence that comply with the given them per year. The 2018 robot theme is Save the Seas, where participants strive to come up with robot innovations that help clean and make our waters sustainable to live-in.
The International Robot Olympiad (IRO) is an annual international robot competition. Over 500 young students who passed a preliminary round from 38 member countries annually to participate in IRO. In this robotics event, participants are given the challenge to make their own robot at the competition site within a strict time limit. As many of the contest categories are team-based, participants are encouraged to cooperate with their teammates to solve the mission given by the IROC.
Together, they will plan and coordinate their actions in order to come up with the most innovative robot program algorithm that solves the problem. This process is aimed to develop students with 4C Skills for the 21st Century: Critical Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, Collaboration Skills, Creative Abilities.
