In Focus: YouTube's Funny Girl Alex Gonzaga Gets Real About Her ‘Insensitive’ YouTube Vlogs

Drawing us into her most candid (and comical) moments with her fam and friends, social media star Alex Gonzaga has been adored on YouTube simply for her rawness. While it's already a given how public figures when placed under the microscope would act more to please, here is the 30 year-old actress-host just being her most authentic—even if some would label her humor as plain arrogance.

“Bata palang ako, pet peeve ko na yung mga pretentious,” she told ABS-CBN Lifestyle at the launch of Block & White’s Sakuha Park. “Ayoko ng mga may double life and double face.”

Netizens, for example, recently called Alex out on YouTube and Twitter (read: comments and threads!) for being “insensitive” in her vlogs. Among her vlogs in hot water was her Cubao Expo visit, where she joked about drug use in the face of the country's current drug war situation. "Anong pinagbubulungan natin? Oh, ano? Mag-ihi tayo. Drug test tayo," she told a random group of bystanders before leaving them with, "Galit na sya sa akin, parang papatayin na niya ako."

Asked about the online noise she has caused, Alex could only muse, “Since then, mahilig na ako magpatawa so mayroon na akong sariling humor na not everyone can understand.” While she enjoys making people laugh, the Nakalimutan Ko Nang Kalimutan Ka star admitted the times she took her jokes too far without intent. “Siguro may times talaga na I’m becoming insensitive because I always see the brighter side of everything. Instead of problematizing things, I just try to make it lighter. But siyempre, not everyone is like that.”

But Alex could only be apologetic for those instances where she seemed to be approaching issues sans any compassion or sensitivity. Much more, she said she respects those who have confronted her about her unguarded remarks. “If everyone will always praise you, validate you, and approve your actions, you won’t be better. Yayabang  ka and iisipin  mo na you’re perfect na,” she said. “So maganda yung may pumupuna sa’yo para mayroon kang room to change and room to improve. For me, it’s totally fine.”

Yet, Alex vows to offer her viewers better content—packed with laughter-inducing ad-libs and narratives, of course. “Babawi ako sa next vlogs ko,” she added.
