Presented by Tony and Grammy award winning producer Jhett Tolentino and FRONTROW Entertainment, the Tony Award Winner for Best Play written by David Henry Hwang M. Butterfly is set to open on September 13! The classic masterpiece which is inspired by Giaccomo Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly" will be directed by award-winning Kanakan-Balintagos at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater, BGC Arts Center, Bonifacio Global City. It is expected to be play loosely based on events from the 1986 espionage trial about a mysterious Chinese opera singer and a French diplomat.
René Gallimard, which will be played by Oliver Borten, is a mild-mannered former French diplomat who considers himself to be poor with women. He meets and falls in love with Chinese opera star Song Liling, which will be played by RS Francisco, a woman whom he considers to be the embodiment of the perfect woman, Madame Butterfly.
RS remains as one of the best theater actos in our country with his credits in numerous productions and variety of roles which continued to hone his craft as a compleat artist. When the play M. Butterfly was revived recently on Broadway, RS thought of bringing it to life once again to the new theater audiences of today. After all, this is the only one role that remains closest to his heart.
Joining RS in the Filipino cast is the outstanding theater actress Pinky Amador who was seen internationally in Cameron Mackintosh’s Miss Saigon will portray Gallimard’s wife Helga. Maya Encila will also be adding pizazz to this rendition of M. Butterfly with her unique personification of bombshell Renee who is a young, liberated Danish woman with whom Gallimard has an affair. Renee’s boldness presents a stark contrast to Song’s modesty, which Gallimard finds both exciting and obnoxious.
