“The first time I performed live for an audience was during my first year in high school. It was my worst live performance. Ever,” rising musician Fern. recalls. But being fully adept in one’s craft comes after several years of hard work. From that first performance to leading an alternative rock band in his early teens and eventually studying the art of music production later on, his efforts have finally paid off.
Now, Fern. is one of the most-sought after up-and-comers in the local music industry. His name topped the charts after releasing his single “Into You” late last year, which skyrocketed to the number one spot shortly after its Spotify debut. At 18, he’s produced his self-titled 6-track EP launched last March, and he’s ready to put out more for everyone’s listening pleasure. “My next EP is coming up, so I’m very excited to share that to everyone,” he reveals. Clearly, Fern. is on his way to make it big.
For one, Fern. dreams big dreams, which include winning a Grammy in the future. “It’s more of a goal to me because I truly believe it will happen,” he says when asked what his wildest fantasy career-wise is. It's obvious he won’t settle as a one-hit wonder, as he continues to grow through experimenting with his sound and collaborating with other artists. So far, he has worked with artists such as Julie Anne San Jose, KingWAW, Sofia Romualdez, and Claudia Barretto. The conversations he had with these talents gave him a new perception and knowledge about music, and he considers himself lucky to be part of the thriving local music scene.
He sets himself apart through his Cool Pop sound, as he’d like to call it. Think Frank Ocean, LANY, and The 1975, who are some of his influences, anchored with ‘80s-inspired beats, and you get that nostalgic, easy groove that captures your attention at first play. Taking it from personal experiences, as well as films and books he resonates with, he works on music that speak of young love, perfectly fitting to this generation’s taste and vibe.
As a producer, he’s able to practice his creative freedom at best. While he’s open to learning from others, Fern. believes its importance to be able to create art in its purest form. “I believe this is how a certain sound is developed and as your career moves forward, you also develop a certain identity with it,” he shares.
Music is universal and Fern. is out to offer more of it to the world. At his age and with everything he’s already achieved, the future looks promising. And until he drops new songs coming pretty soon, we’ll satisfy our eargasm for now by putting his record on repeat.
