Joshua Garcia has truly come a long way from the beginning of his career. From his first stint on Pinoy Big Brother: All In back in 2014 to starring roles in primetime series The Good Son and romantic film Love You To The Stars And Back, the OPPO amabassador navigated through the industry in a series of trial-and-errors until he found his footing and shot to the very top.
However, it is also because of his powerful presence in showbiz that people have begun to forget that this young man is only human, much like the rest of us who are all allowed a margin of error and a chance to learn.
During our digital feature shoot in partnership with OPPO, we got to sit down with Joshua to pick his brain on what it’s like to feel his every move magnified under the spotlight. It’s no secret that privacy has become a luxury and, combined with critical people with internet access, it becomes an ugly reality. With people telling you left and right all the times you went wrong, we asked Joshua what he personally thought was his biggest mistake, and he referred to the latest wrinkle in his relationship with on-screen partner and fellow OPPO ambassador Julia Barretto.
“Ang mahalaga ngayon, natuto ako sa pagkakamaling ‘yun,” he commented, preferring not dig up old wounds. It was an understandable sentiment as he knew that there would be no use in beating yourself up with a past mistake.
Instead of going into detail, we instead asked him what he did to fix that mistake to which is quickly answered, “Umpisahan mo sa pag-apologize. Ang importante doon ay nag-sorry ka.” After all, the first step to recovery is admitting to the problem.
Of course, Joshua also knows that apologies mean nothing without follow-through. “Kailangan mapaniwala mo siya na deserve mo ang kapatawaran,” the actor explained further. “Gagawa ka ng paraan para mabalik ‘yung tiwala niya sa’yo.”
It takes a lot of bravery to acknowledge when you’ve made a mistake–a special kind of courage to do it with a whole nation watching and a whole lot of personal growth to do something to make things better. Joshua is far from perfect, but like the rest of us, he’s learning and he’s growing with every lesson. And that’s more than enough for us to applaud him and give him the respect and admiration that he well deserves.
