In Focus: A Timeline Of The Taylor-Katy Drama And How They Got Over The Bad Blood

Swifties and Katycats, rejoice! The world’s biggest pop stars, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, finally ended their high-profile feud by announcing it in a very millennial (albeit anticlimactic) way: an Instagram story. It seems there would be no more quality diss songs like “Bad Blood” and “Swish Swish” for us.

People are still reeling from the surprise North and South Korea reconciliation, but no one was really prepared for waking up to Taylor's ground-breaking IG story. It featured Taylor receiving an actual olive branch and a heartwarming letter from long-time perceived frenemy Katy. The post was captioned “Thank you Katy,” followed by a heart emoji. It was such a sweet gesture considering it was also the day "Taylor kicks off her Reputation Tour.

Katy’s handwritten letter started off with “Hey Old Friend, I’ve been doing some reflecting on past miscommunications and hard feelings between us. I really want to clear the air. I’m deeply sorry for…” And the rest is, of course, private.

It's the end of an era, apparently. But, fam, it took a long while before the two reached this day. Here’s a recap of what transpired in this rollercoaster of a friendship. (We decided to use their very own hit songs as chapter titles for maximum sentimental feels.)

Chapter 1 (2009-2012): Teenage Dream

Ah, a friendship that’s made of teenage dreams! Back in circa 2009-2012, Taylor and Katy were such pop star besties that you would often see them doing cute poses together during awards shows and music events. They would even tweet sweet nothings to each other!

The duo even performed Katy's “Hot ‘N Cold” together in one show!

Chapter 2 (2013): Everything Has Changed

And it was as sad as how Taylor and Ed Sheeran sang that song! Perry reportedly snatched the backup dancers who were supposed to join Taylor during her RED tour which ignited the feud. It didn’t help that Katy was by then already dating Taylor’s ex-boyfriend John Mayer.

Chapter 3 (2014-2017): Bad Blood

The feud became public when Taylor came out with a new album featuring the song “Bad Blood” which seemed to be about her friendship with Katy.

In one of Taylor's interview, without naming names, she confirmed that the friendship’s over and that she and the person she wrote the song about are “straight-up enemies.”

Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’…She did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.’”

The interview prompted Katy to tweet a mysterious “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…” after Taylor's interview came out. Are you still with us? The Mean Girls reference made us reach for popcorns that time!

Likewise, when EDM superstar Calvin Harris had a major falling out with his ex-girlfriend Swift and tweeted “I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship, you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do. I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”

Katy joined in the drama, and tweeted: “Time, the ultimate truth teller” which was seemingly directed at Taylor.

When Katy released an album in 2017, she also came up with “Swish, Swish” which came across as a response to Swift’s “Bad Blood.”

The "Roar" singer also disclosed in an interview that she tried to reach out to Taylor but “she shut me down and wrote a song.”

Last year also saw two incidents which somehow indicated that the feud is stronger than ever. When Katy dropped her Witness album, Taylor released her songs on streaming services that very same day, a move that stole the former's thunder. Moreover, when Katy was tapped to host the VMAs that year, Taylor picked the very event to release her music video, “Look What You Made Me Do”—a direct hit to her haters and enemies. #Shade!

However, despite the ongoing push and pull between the two singers, Katy expressed her willingness to end the fight. In an interview with Arianna Huffington, she said she wanted to bury the hatchet, saying:

“I think it’s time. There are bigger fish to fry, and there are real problems in the world. You know what I’m saying? And I love her, and I want the best for her. And I think she’s a fantastic songwriter, and I think that, you know, if we, both her and I, can be representatives of strong women that come together despite their differences, I think the whole world is going to like, ‘Yeah, well we can do this.’ I don’t know. Like maybe I don’t agree with everything she does and she doesn’t agree with everything I do, but I just really truly want to come together in a place of love and forgiveness and understanding and compassion.”

Chapter 4 (2018): Shake It Off With Fireworks

May 8, 2018 marks the end of the Taylor Swift-Katy Perry rift. Katy's gesture and Taylor's reply really shook things off, so why don’t we celebrate with fireworks? Yup, that’s a stretch but there’s truly a reason to celebrate! Katy sent an actual olive branch and a sweet letter to Taylor, and we could all tell that she was thoroughly touched!

This feels like a series finale, but we think this is still a developing story so let’s be on Instagram-watch for Taylor-Katy sleepovers and maybe a possible song collaboration? Stay tuned!
