As one of the biggest stars in Asia, Lee Chaerin, widely known as CL, is currently conquering the American music industry. But before she moved to United States to become a solo artist, she was the leader and rapper of the fierce girl group 2NE1—alongside Sandara, Bom, and Minzy.
CL has always of breaking through the international music scene with 2NE1. That’s why she bravely faced the struggles of being an Asian act in America alone because the plan was for her to build a successful career in America, so she can bring her group along with her. 2NE1 did get their worldwide recognition, performing in shows like America’s Next Top Model and The Bachelor but unfortunately, 2NE1 disbanded in 2016, following the members’ announcement of their plans for their individual careers.
CL, however, remained consistent with her goal to represent her homeland in America. With her overflowing charisma and fearless mindset, there’s no doubt that CL could take the world by storm any time! To show you what we’re talking about, we listed the things that prove she’s breaking global barriers through her music.
1. CL is already working with outstanding personalities in the American music industry.
It was in 2014 when Scooter Braun became CL’s manager, and if you’re familiar of who this mogul manager, you would know that he’s behind the success of huge stars Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. We wouldn’t be surprised if CL’s career end up as big as theirs! Plus, she already collaborated with famed DJs Diplo and Skrillex whom she also became friends with. CL is definitely on a roll when it comes to connections!
2. She’s close to a lot of notorious fashion designers.
CL has been spotted in multiple fashion shows in New York and South Korea and is dubbed as one of South Korea’s fashion icons, so it’s no surprise that the feisty idol is close to a lot of famous fashion designers like Alexander Wang, Karl Lagerfeld, Jeremy Scott, and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac! As one of Jeremy Scott’s muses and best friends and being a part of Alexander’s “Wang Squad”, CL has truly gotten the fashion industry’s utmost adoration which has become one of her motivations to do better in America!
3. She appeared in Vogue’s 73 Questions and The Late Late Show with James Corden.
If you’ve been a long-time subscriber of Vogue’s YouTube channel, you would know why it is a big deal if a celebrity was invited to do the 73 Questions segment—stars like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez, and Taylor Swift appeared here already. She appeared in the popular American late-night talk show The Late Late Show with James Corden where she performed her single “Lifted”. As CL gets more recognition among international media outlets, it’s only a matter of time until she fulfills her destiny as the next big thing in music!
4. She was one of the performers at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The crowd were amazed during CL’s performance at the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium. She performed her first solo single “Baddest Female” and 2NE1’s hit song “I Am The Best”. She also met up with the South Korean President Moon Jae In and America’s First Daughter Ivanka Trump, proving that she’s a true high society idol. It was her most memorable performance so far, and we’re quite sure the crowd would agree. We felt goosebumps when the entire stadium sang along with her!
5. She’s about to make her Hollywood debut as an actress in Mile 22.
This might come as a shocker to everyone, but CL’s actually about to make her first acting gig in Hollywood! It’s known that she declined numerous offers already to be an actress in her homeland since she wanted to focus on her music career. However, it’s not a secret that CL does have a bit of acting experience, given that she’s the star of 2NE1’s “Go Away” music video. We totally couldn’t hold our excitement any longer as we anticipate CL’s appearance in Peter Berg’s action-thriller film Mile 22 which is scheduled to be released on August 3, 2018.
6. Her solo North America tour “Hello Bitches” was a success!
In October 2016, CL started her first tour as a solo artist in America—visiting nine cities including San Francisco and Chicago. With K-pop groups like BIGBANG, BTS, and Girls’ Generation who also had their own tour outside Asia—CL is actually the second female Korean idol, next to Ailee, to have her own US tour! Even if she had already produced numerous solo tracks, CL still included some of 2NE1’s songs in her set list which gave the concertgoers a wave of nostalgia. Perhaps, a world tour is up next? We can’t wait to see you live in Manila, Kween!
7. Other international artists are a fan of her!
Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui once took her adoration for CL to Twitter when a fan told her to listen to CL and Jessi’s songs and she replied saying “Wait, I LOVE CL.” Pop sensantion Lorde also admitted that she’s a fan of CL when she stated in an interview that she loves K-pop and personally would love to collaborate with CL someday! Plus, Justin Bieber was in full support when she released her breakthrough solo song “Hello Bitches” that he even shared the link of the dance performance in his Twitter account with the caption “This is dope”.
Truly, CL is slowly making the globe recognize her, and we know it’s only a matter of time until she becomes K-pop’s answer to Beyonce. Are you a fan of the Baddest Female, too?
