The OPM scene will never run out of excellent tunes with a fresh roster of artists working their way in every now and then. From simply satisfying our musical cravings to repping the Filipino sound abroad, young crops are breaking through barriers and some of them are have gone to rep the Filipino sound abroad!
These game-changers are just going to get bigger this year as they bring their masterpieces into the spotlight, and, of course, we're getting front row seats. If you've been off the loop with what they're up to so far this 2018, here's a rundown of the best acts to put back in your radar!
1. Kiana Valenciano
After debuting with electro-pop single "Circles" and later shifting to R&B style with "Does She Know," there's no denying that Kiana is owning the world lately as an artist, as well as a fashion inspo. She also joined Tarsier Records aiming to bring local music to a wider territory that deserves to hear it. 2018 is also going steady for her as she dropped her first EP Grey and opened for the third run of the summer music fest Manila X. Now, with her latest release entitled "Misfits," we are surely blessed to have this sweetheart spicing things up in the music scene!
2. Farewell Fair Weather
Six-piece soul-fusion act Farewell Fair Weather is leaving zero pages blank when it comes to telling stories through their craft. For years, this band has been part of the local indie scene–they were selected as the "Chosen One" at Jack Daniel's On Stage Philippines Indie Music Awards 2015 and have performed in Music Matters Live in Singapore in the same year. Fast-forward to April 2018, they are finally making their official mark as they released their first full-length album entitled Blank Pages. Jamming to their well-produced soulful tracks will surely take you to a musical journey you won't regret!
3. Coeli San Luis
Folk singer-songwriter and cellist Coeli kickstarted her journey by joining Ryan Cayabyab's Elements songwriting camp in 2013 and later found her go signal to officially be part of the scene as she started performing in bar gigs. Since then, she's been impressing us all with her tender yet soul-grabbing singing chops that we'll never get tired of listening, first with her heartwrenching single "Magkaibigan O Magka-Ibigan" and this year's EP, Here Today, which she's currently taking on tour!
4. Where's Ramona?
Apparently, Ramona's still nowhere to be found, but punk-pop band Where's Ramona? is everywhere else with unstoppable gigs! We're grateful that they made the right decision to go outside the four corners of UST and share with us their raw energy and edgy sound. Now, we know the fans' hype is real after announcing that they're currently recording for an EP expected to be out mid 2018!
Greatly influenced by Frank Ocean and The 1975, up-and-coming artist Fern Tan A.K.A. Fern. singlehandedly passed into the musical arena, well, because he's got what it akes. At a young age of 17, he has already proven himself by composing and producing his self-titled debut EP that came out in March and performing at Manila neXt like no neophyte. Surely, you'll be vibing to his songs in no time!
6. Keiko Necesario
Keiko is definitely swimming in tune with the current of her career evident in the release of her sophomore EP Escape, a record that's more distinct than her first acoustic one, Through It All. She also embarked on a tour supporting the new EP and has recently tweeted about writing for her forthcoming album, already completing two tracks off it and more in the works!
This nine-piece folk-pop group's refreshing music is gaining the rightful recognition around the country and even overseas performing alongside Kiana last year at Singapore's Music Matters Live, the annual gathering of various artists from across the world. This year, they have joined the line-up of Wanderland Music And Arts Festival along with local and international acts. Their cozy and hearty sound is getting a lot of support from literally everyone including Parokya Ni Edgar, Ebe Dancel, and Anne Curtis, because why not? Their praise-worthy appeal is certainly not kathang-isip!
8. The Ransom Collective
Another worth-applauding Filipino act that's getting the heat of 2018 is The Ransom Collective for representing the country in ASEAN-India Music Festival October last year and in Singapore's Laneway Music Festival this year. A world-class talent is what this indie-folk band really is! They have just released the vinyl version of their debut album Traces and promptly teased new waves of musical stuff coming very, very soon!
9. IV Of Spades
Speaking of going big, there's no one deserving of the mention than 2017's major breakout band IV Of Spades! They have the loudest fans to date, serving the kind of presence that appeals to audience of all ages as if they’re taken straight out of a '70s show. They may be facing controversy regarding front man Unique Salonga's absence these days. But no, Barbara, they're not disbanding. In fact, they're working on an album eyed to drop before the year ends. For now, we're hoping that they get back on their full groove soon!
10. KZ Tandingan
KZ, despite being a household name in the OPM industry for a long time, shows no sign of stopping at leaving a mark throughout the world. The Soul Supreme continues to make her fellow Pinoys proud after her successful stint at China's singing competition Singer 2018, all the more so when she received praises from international superstar Jessie J. Fans also must brace themselves as KZ gears up for a major solo concert in June!
Are you ready for what these local acts have in store for us the rest of 2018? We suggest you come prepared when the time of their releases arrive because their music means no joke, just plain exceptional business! Which band or artist are you currently keeping an eye on?
