In Focus: The “Meet Me In St. Gallen” Café Is Also A Hub For Budding Young Talents

By Mariel Abanes

Remember the café in the second part of the movie Meet Me In St. Gallen where Jesse (Carlo Aquino) and Celeste (Bela Padilla) met again after their fateful first night together? Jesse walks up to the counter, orders his drink, then hears the barista call “Katy Perry”–a name he knows only one person uses–and, suddenly, he’s reunited with Celeste as she grabs her freshly-made cup of joe.

What a romantic encounter, isn’t it? What made the scene more kilig is how fitting the setting is. After all, we're all suckers for a coffee shop love story! The location is complete with a cozy vibe brought by rustic industrial hanging lights, wooden furniture, and plant decors. Add the smell of coffee in the air and two people enjoying some down time together–well, you get the picture.

But don’t just picture it, as you can actually recreate that Meet Me In St. Gallen café scene! Meet Bubba Lab, a “lab”-inspired café that opened its new branch in Lamp Quarters, Marikina that served as one of the movie’s shoot location.

The “Lab,” though, isn’t your typical café. Apart from serving great drinks and meals (don’t miss their World Coffee series–drinks inspired from coffee around the world which ia a definite must-try, cheese flat bread, and the famous Super Nova,) it also serves as a hub for budding talents.

During weekends, people flock in the café to watch bands, spoken word artists, and other performers for their regular Open Mic sessions. Sure, it isn’t like your typical bar gig with booze and chicken wings, but the laidback vibe creates a crowd that isn’t intimidating, thus a carefree, relaxed space for performers and open mic-goers alike. No wonder it’s the perfect location for the St. Gallen leads to meet again!

To sign up for their weekly performances, just send them a message on their Facebook or Twitter accounts. Now, that piece of poetry or song you’ve made a couple of months ago is ready to be made public. Who knows, you might bump into your own Jesse or Celeste during your visit? Oh, the possibilities!
