Lifestyle Hotshots: IG-Famous Mountaineer Javi Cang On Chasing Stars And Geeking Over 'Stars Wars'

By Nick Bautista

You have probably come across the follow-worthy Instagram feed of Javi Cang, scrolled down and liked a photo or ten, and often found yourself day-dreaming of being atop a mountain or in the crystal-clear waters, too. Javi’s passion for adventure is infectious and is reflected in every picture he posts—a drone shot of Pescador Island, the peaks of The Himalayas, or stunning shots of Bucal Falls. Yet, behind all that bone of adventure, this 27-year-old is also a finance professional, loves reading books, and is very much into Star Wars. A total geek, indeed. Get to know him more below!

On a scale of 1-10, how much of a geek/nerd are you?
“I think I would score pretty high, probably a nine. I like researching a lot on the things that I'm interested in. Let's say, I climb a lot of mountains, and every time I go to a new place I always research about the geography, the culture, the people there. And just learning more about the place rather than just, like, on the surface. I guess for me, it makes me more of a geek.”

What sparked your interest in the particular field you're in right now?
“I started at a very young age; because when I was young, I was exposed to the outdoors through my mom. And as I grew up, that hobby, that passion sort of carried on. I continued hiking and climbing ever since.”

Who's your role model in your industry, and why?
“My role model would probably be this guy named, Renan Ozturk. Most people probably would not have heard of him, but he's a Nat Geo photographer and mountaineer. I really like him because he embodies what a true adventure is. He doesn't search for fame all the time, and he's really out there because he enjoys being in the moment. He actually enjoys his passion for what it is, rather than the fame.”

How do you use your smarts to your advantage career wise?

“I think it's just always being on your toes; whatever it is, be it on your career or whatever passion that you're indulging in. Just being on your toes and always thinking at the moment, and always being alert. It's very important. At least, making the right decisions all the time.”

Name your favorite book!
“There are a lot. But I think, top of mine would be this book that I'm reading now, which is by Osho, Living Dangerously. It's a philosophy book. I think it gives a lot of insight into life, and it's a book that has a lot of perspectives in it. For me, I enjoy exploring perspectives other than my own. Because it gives a fresh look at life, and sort of like, gives meaning also to your own struggles and to your own success, if any.”

Your favorite movie?
Star Wars! The whole Star Wars—both trilogies, plus seven and eight, the entire thing. But the first trilogy, for me, is the best—four, five, six.”

Your favorite band?
“My favorite band would probably have to be, (of) all time, the Goo Goo Dolls. I think because I grew up with them, and if you listen to a band regularly or a lot when you're growing up, it carries on when you're older. So, for me, it's sort of like my comfort band. Every time I just wanna listen to something, I just pop in Goo Goo Dolls, and it's always a good thing to listen to.”

What's you guilty pleasure?
“Sweets, candies, ice cream—I eat a lot of ice cream, chocolates, yeah!”

In terms of catching a girl's eye, do smart guys have the advantage over sporty guys?
“I'd probably say no. I guess it really depends on how either your smarts or your sportiness combine into having a good personality. Cause if you're smart or if you're athletic, it doesn't really mean that you'll be a nice guy. For me, i think, being a nice guy is the most important thing, rather than those two.”
