As much we all try to have a positive outlook on life, we can't help but feel a bit blue whenever we take a look at the mirror once in a while. There might be that annoying zit that has made your face its permanent territory. Perhaps, it's your flat backside that just won't get thicker no matter how many squats you do. It's totally natural. Most of us have our own insecurites that we focus a little too much on. We don't have a perfect body, but here's the deal: we shouldn't go out of our way to achieve one.
A big contribution that makes us so body conscious is the unattainable standards that the entertainment industry imposes. Celebrities are constantly showcased to have good hair, long legs, a tight waist, and clear skin. Behind the limelight however, most stars are just like the rest of us. There are few who are fearless to bare all and be real. These celebrities show that standards don't and should never exist when it comes to beauty. From stretch marks to imprefect skin, let these empowering women show you how to love your flaws!
1. Ashley Graham
The supermodel has always been an advocate of body positivity. Her position in the fashion industry is a feat in itself as she is one of the most popular plus size models to break the industry norm of mostly slender women. Glamorous image aside, the America's Next Top Model judge is not afriad to share her flaws. Last January, Graham posted a photo of her cellulite on Instagram. The model captioned the post saying, "I'm not ashamed of a few lumps, bumps or cellulite.. and you shouldn't be either. " Try to remember Ashley's words before you start overanalyzing your body in front of a mirror the next morning!
2. Kendall Jenner
Not everyone outgrows acne after high school and Kendall is one of them. The elder Jenner sister's recent Golden Globes appearance made quite a buzz as photos of her on the red carpet showed her having visible acne. Reactions were both positive and negative, but Kendall took notice of a Twitter user who wrote: "Ok but @KendallJenner showing up and strutting her acne while looking like a gorgeous star is what every girl needs to understand." The supermodel quickly responded by encouraging others to not let a pimple or two stop you from slaying!
Even girls with a thinner frame get shamed too. Most are ridiculed for lookinf sickly and are wrongly accused of having an eating disorder. However, singer-actress Zendaya is not here for this. Once critcized for her appearance at the 2016 Kid's Choice awards, the Disney Channel star quickly clapped back saying, "Now… everyone go look in the mirror at their beautiful body, and love that sh*t #thickgirlswinning #skinnygirlswinning ." Yes Zendaya, #weallwinning!
4. Khloe Kardashian
The reality star has been very vocal about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. For a decade in the spotlight, the youngest Kardashian sister has recieved a wave of criticisms and unfair comparisons with her sisters. Khloe has since been a fitness inspo for a lot of women. The Reveng Body host encourages us to both have physical and mental wellness while looking our best!
5. Demi Lovato
One of the most outspoken figures on body positivity, Demi has made it as her life's mission to spread the message of self love. Having highly-publicized battles with mental illness and eating disorders, Demi doesn't shy away from being real on such topics. The singer recently posted on Instagram saying, "I’m letting go of my perfectionism and embracing freedom from self criticism. Learning to love my body the way it is is challenging but life changing." Here's to feeling empowered from within!
No one in the world undertstands our body more than ourselves, but we shouldn't be too hard on it. For every one thing we hate about ourselves, try to remember another thing we do like. Our overall wellness is more important than trying to achieve a body goal that's unattainable in the first place. The next time you feel bad about any "imperfection," remember that even the likes of Kendall Jenner go through this dilemma, too!
