A recent controversy broke in the K-pop industry involving EXO's Byun Baekhyun, the main vocalist of the group, during a fan signing event held last December 30. The fan shared with the K-pop star that she was depressed and asked him for comforting words. He then told the fan to "live happily" and allegedly added, "A lot of people say they’re depressed. If I may express my thoughts, I don’t know why people get depressed or have insomnia to be honest." According to most, Baekhyun was mistranslated and misquoted by an anti-EXO, making it seem like he didn't care about the mental health issues.
The false accusation has been cleared out when the said fan shared online what actually happened during their meeting. But to reiterate how much Baekhyun deserves nothing but our love, here are five things that prove that he's an adorable fluff we'd squeeze with a hug if we could!
1. He's an actual ball of sunshine.
Just like how his members and EXO-Ls describe him, Baekhyun is known as the group's happy pill. Since the beginning, Baekhyun has already exhibited his optimistic side in the industry. He's not afraid to look like a fool just to entertain his fans and members. Besides his relatable humor, Baekhyun has a way of making everything he does look funny and cute. With his fluffy cheeks and chinito eyes, it will be hard not to smile just by looking at him!
2. He cares for his fans more than himself.
There has been a lot of instances where Baekhyun showed how much he loves his fans, telling them that he gets heartbroken when his fans are not happy and he's okay with being hated as long as no one hurts them.
He even renamed the fandom EXO-Ls as AERIS, deriving the letter "L" from EXO-L and added the famous Korean diminutive 'ie,' which together sounded like "Aeri." Baekhyun said that "EXO-L" sounded too formal, and he wanted to call his fans in a more intimate way. So, it's no surprise that a lot of his fans feel inexplicably close to him!
3. He loves playing with kids.
It's always nice to see guys playing with kids, so what more if it's your idol? Fans never really knew Baekhyun is fond with kids until he made a guest appearance with co-member Chanyeol in The Return Of Superman, a reality show featuring Korea's cutest toddlers and their dads. The two visited the twins Seojun and Seoeon, and got instantly close to them as if they were their appas! We don't know which is cuter, Baekhyun or the baby twins, TBH!
4. His adorable side stands out in variety shows.
Though he's kind of shy when he's around people he's not familiar with, Baekhyun's endearingly cheerful persona pops up in every variety show he's appeared in. During his guesting in SBS's Master Key, he instantly got along with actress Jo Bo Ah even though they only met for the first time that day! The show's PD also praised Baekhyun for his variety skills and friendliness with everyone and mentioned that he wished to work with him again in the future.
5. He doesn't see his antis as antis.
Through this controversy, we saw Baekhyun's mature side. Instead of being mad at the person who spread the false translation about his statement on depression, he said sorry for a mistake he didn't make. He posted an apology letter on his Instagram account, saying that he vows to act with cautious in the future. He didn't try to make excuses and simply embraced the attacks of his antis maturely. Isn't he truly worth looking up to?
We hope this becomes a lesson to every fandom that it's not okay to attack one member or group just because you don't stan them. Clearly, our Baekhyunee doesn't deserve any of the hate thrown at him. #WeLoveYouBaekhyun!
