We all prayed for 2017 to be kinder to us than the previous year. If you're one of the people who feel as if their prayers have been heard, then good for you! However, if it seems like 2017 was just as hard to get through (if not harder) as 2016, then we feel you, too.

Think about it this way—you lived through 2017 and made it to the end of the year! And once the new year starts, there's no use in holding on to past pains. If you plan on making 2018 your year, here are the things you should leave behind before the year ends. 

1. Bad habits

If you're one of the people aspiring to become a better version of themselves once the new year rolls around, then you must understand that part of this means leaving behind or growing out of bad habits. You can grow out of procrastinating and constantly being late with baby steps. And while habits like drinking and smoking can't be removed overnight, you can try to slowly cut down on your intake until you throw it away altogether!

2. Heartaches

Heartbreaks are hard to get over, especially when it's the kind that turns into a physical pain. If you've set your hopes up on finding The One in 2017 and ended up with a broken heart, don't worry—we've all been there. And whether you are willing to open up your heart again or simply choose to be your own person in 2018, the important thing is that you allow your heart to heal.

3. Regrets

Most people regret the things they did not say or do more than they regret the things they did actually do. If you missed an opportunity to go after the career of your dreams or tell someone you love them, now is the right time to stop fussing over it. Throw away your regrets because with the new year comes new opportunities. Now that you've learned your lesson, you surely won't any slip by.

4. Toxic people

If you feel like you haven't grown as much in 2017, it's probably because you've been keeping a lot of toxic people in your life. Figure out who's been holding you back or giving you a lot of emotional stress. Show them the door, and let them know you have no room in your life for them. You'd be surprised how much easier and better life is without anyone harshing your mellow.

5. The Old You

Look back on yourself five years ago, and you'll realize that no one ever remains the same. Without even knowing it, you've become a completely different person and that's okay. If you feel you've become a hollow shell of your former self, then maybe you can dedicate the new year to rebuilding and rediscovering yourself. If you feel stronger than ever, 2018 will be the year to grab opportunities and grow into a better person. Either way, it's always healthy to let go of your old self especially if you want to become a new and better you.

As 2017 comes to a close, give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back. You may be beaten and bent but you're ready to wipe the dust off of yourself and face 2018 with renewed courage and confidence! Cheers!
