Even though he’s half-Filipino and half British, teen wonder Edward Barber actually hails from Germany where he spent a huge chunk of his childhood in. There, he lived with his parents and sister Laura, with fond memories of playing in the sun and taking on outdoor adventures with his family and closest friends.
When asked about his favorite childhood memory, Edward recalls his weekly football games with his classmates right after school. “Every Friday, our classes would finish at 12pm. So we’d be playing football for the rest of the day until around 8pm,” he shares. “Here, in the Philippines, you see a lot of basketball courts. In Germany, you see football pitches and fields of grass. We’d play there for hours on end, and then we’d get in trouble with our parents for coming home late,” he reminisces fondly, “Until the day I die, that’s going to be living with me.”
Edward considers himself lucky for having an easy life in Germany: he was sent to a good school and was able to travel frequently with his family. Every year, they would also fly to the Philippines which explains why he’s close to his Filipino roots and fluent in the language.
Although Edward grew up in a well-off family, the 17-year-old is impressively level-headed, courteous, and generally way ahead of boys his age. Perhaps, it is because his parents instilled the value of hard work in early on. “They always made sure I and my sister didn’t overdo it. If you have money, you should keep it. Save it for a long time, and don’t just spend it all at once.” He adds, “If we wanted something, we had to work for it. For example, I had to get 90% for my school report, and in return, my parents got me my first phone ever.”
Edward has surely come a long way from his school years in Germany. But, even while he's living the life of a rising teen star here in the Philippines, one of his childhood passions remains burning. “Gusto kong maging author hanggang ngayon,” Edward confesses. “Noong bata pa ako, I was really quiet. I would sit there in the car, stare out the window, and think about stories. I’ve always wanted and will always want to write books.”
Considering the meteoric rise of his stardom and the remarkable set of values he possesses, it’s only a matter of time until Edward reaches his full potential. Until then, all eyes will be on this charmer as he takes on the most exciting times of his life yet!
