Miss Universe 2017 Watch: Some Other 'Peters' Wins—And She's Just As Lovely As Our Very Own Rachel!

Congratulations are in order for Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters! The second South African to hold the title after nearly four decades, following Miss Universe 1978 Margaret Gardiner, there are more than a few things that we need to know about the reigning monarch!

Demi-Leigh hails from the South African coastal community of Sedgefield in the Western Cape province. She has since used her title as Miss South Africa to draw attention to key issues in her hometown, like a fire that swept through the nearby town of Knysna, burning more than 10,000 hectares in the region.

She enjoys an active lifestyle. In between rigorous physical training, she finds the time to participate in marathons.

She has a soft spot for children. Demi Leigh has a step-sister from her dad and step-mom, Franje, who is diagnosed with subtotal cerebellar agenisis, a condition that leaves a person without a cerebellum.  This has inspired her to lend her voice and influence to several causes for underprivileged and disabled kids.

Demi Leigh trained to be a leader. She holds a degree in B.Com Business Management and Entrepreneurship from the North-West University, which gears graduates in supervisory positions in a wide variety of business settings.

"I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended." Nelson Mandela Today I officially graduated and received my degree in B.Com Business management and entrepreneurship. Today was about taking a moment to stop, look back and appreciate the hard work and dedication that I have put into educating myself. Thank you to my family who supported me in every possible way. This is one great hill done and dusted. Now for the many more to come. #graduation #nwu #pukke #entrepreneur #business #DemiForMissSA

Demi Leigh has inner strength. Shortly after being crowned Miss South Africa, she was robbed at gunpoint a month. Rising above her traumatizing experience, she helped develop a program to empower women through giving self-defense training to handle various dangerous situations.

Our Heavenly Father sent me all his Angels last night to protect me. I am safe and unharmed and I definitely believe that the precaution I took also played a very big role in my safety. To the selfless and courageous young lady that stopped to pick me up in the middle of the road, you are my hero and I honestly don't know how to thank you enough for what you did for me. To the three off duty ADT and Neighborhood watch security guards that put themselves in harms way to see me safe, thank you! SAPD, @official_misssa organisation and @CellC thank you for all your support and assistance in making this traumatizing event as seamless as possible. It's people like you who give me even more hope for our beautiful South Africa. Yes, we experience hardships but the good always out ways the bad. ??????
