Miss Universe 2017 Watch: 5 #GirlPower Lessons We Learned From South Africa's Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

It may have crushed us to the bones when our Miss Universe bet Rachel Peters didn't make it to the Top 5. But, there's also no denying that the newly crowned Miss Universe, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, epitomizes the true definition of a beauty queen. She exudes a regal grace, has an impressive level of social awareness, and serves as a real inspiration to us women out here.

Just by watching the pageant from our television screens, we've come to conclude that Demi-Leigh is truly deserving of the crown! She's a real #GirlPower figure that we can take a page from. Here are some of the empowering takeaways we got from her!

1. Fight back.

As we all know, Demi-Leigh went through an attempted highjacking incident just a month after her coronation as Miss South Africa back in June. Being the brave soul that she is, she escaped danger by punching one of her three armed attackers in the throat. This highlights the importance of having proper knowledge when it comes to defending and protecting ourselves: ladies can and should fight back in any given situation that threatens our security and wellbeing!

2. We are #Unbreakable.

After her hijacking experience, Demi-Leigh made sure that women in South Africa know how to stand up against any form of violence. This is why she started her campaign #Unbreakable which empowers women both emotionally and physically. In her promotional video, she encourages us to stand tall, choose joy over fear, and know that we are fierce inside and out!

3. Girls support girls.

In this interview about her advocacy, Demi-Leigh also emphasized the importance of being able to express our emotions, no matter how flawed they may seem to be. "It's so much easier work through when you know that there's people holding your hands and walking through this with you," she shares. It's all about asking for and finding the support we need and lending our own support to others by letting them know that we got their back. That's exactly what we needed to hear, Demi Leigh!

4. Push for equality.

During the Q&A portion in the Top 5 round, Demi-Leigh was asked: "Women make up 49% of the global workforce. What do you believe is the most important issue facing women in the workplace today, and why?" Her socially aware response was her instant ticket into the next round: "In some cases, women get paid 75% of what men earn for doing the same job, working the same hours. And I do not believe that that is right. I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world. Thank you." True that! Major #GirlPower vibes right there!

5. Confidence is all about overcoming your fears.

Demi-Leigh's winning answer is something we can all learn from. When asked which quality of hers she's most proud of, the South African stunner replied, "As Miss Universe you have to be confident in who you are as an individual. A Miss Universe is a woman [who] has overcome many fears, and, by that, she is able to help other women overcome their fears. She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for, and I think that is exactly who I am." Her values are not far from our very own Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach's—she's also all about being confidently beautiful with a heart! In our opinion, Demi-Leigh truly deserves this win!

The Philippines might have lost this year's competition, but we were so glad to how the new queen uses her beauty, influence, and voice to empower the world (the universe rather!) with her inspiring messages and advocacies! Congratulations, Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters!
