Dabbling in business at a young age can be quite scary, but there's no doubt that it's a smart move. For Glamour Studio's Jasmine Ang, taking over her mom's fashion brand was a risk she knew she was ready to take. It may seem like a daunting task to run a business in your early twenties, but this 24-year-old girl boss clearly has the knack for it.
From her willingness to do the dirty work to finding the right people to join her team, Jasmine is definitely on the right track when it comes to building a fashion empire. Check out our interview with her, and you'll surely be inspired!
What made you decide to establish your own brand?
Glamour Studio was actually established by my mother. It started out as a small shop where we would sell random clothes. It was only last year when I took charge of the brand. The reason why I decided to take on the brand was because I saw its potential. The brand already had an existing market; it was just about uplifting the brand image, going digital, and having a bigger presence while staying true to who we are. I'm a person who puts everything in what I do. The challenges of building this brand seemed like a great opportunity for growth and learning.
Can you tell us about Glamour Studio and the idea behind it?
Its actually fairly simple: it's fashionable clothing made affordable. Yes, we want to make fashionable and trendy clothes but what matters the most is our customer's concerns. Will they be able to afford it? Will our clothes look flattering on them? Will they be able to wear them repeatedly? Being guided by these questions we are able to stay true to who we are as a brand.
You took over your mom's business at a young age. Did you have doubts at first? How did you overcome them?
The trust of the people around me gave me the confidence that I would be able to do this. Sometimes you just really need good people around you. To build a brand is a team effort, so surround yourself with people who are driven and passionate. Good energy and confidence is infectious. If you have that around you surely will feel it too.
Whats the biggest challenge of launching a business?
The trickiest part is managing your expenses and cash flow. At the end the day, it is a business that runs with a certain capital. How do you grow the brand without exhausting your resources? How sure are you that your marketing efforts will convert into purchases? How long would it take for you to get back what you've spent? These questions are what I face on a daily basis. The reason why they are difficult is because there is no definite answer. The secret is to be prepared; take risks when you are ready and not just because you want to.
What do you think are the top 3 things that contribute to the success of your business?
First would be to have a dream. Without a vision or goal it would be impossible to start anything. Having a certain amount of passion makes one motivated and determined to make that dream a reality.
Second would be being hands on. I believe that if you want something to happen, you have to make it happen for yourself. You have to be involved in every step of the way. That is how you learn and how you get a better sense of the business.
Last but definitely not the least, find the right people. Believe it or not we are only four people working behind Glamour Studio. I believe that the most critical key to success is your team. It's not about having a big team; it's about having an effective team. You have to appreciate and love them, and they will be there for you.
What kind of people do you love working with?
I love working with people who are hardworking but also know how to have fun. Yes, it's important to be efficient and good at your job, but it's no fun to work with people who are too serious. I like people who can balance work with having a good time. I think that injecting humor to the work atmosphere lessens the stress and also makes going to work more enjoyable.
What's the most important lesson you've learned in business?
Despite all your efforts, you still can't control everything. You have to remain calm in order to think straight when dealing with a situation. The calmer you are the more likely you'll solve the issue. Also, don't blame anything on anyone. It's not a healthy practice. You have to stand as a leader and learn to accept mistakes.
Whats your advice for young people who want to start their own business?
Take your time! Never rush because good things come to those who wait. Patience is truly rewarding. In my experience, the right people came at the right time. If it's meant to happen, it will. But you also have to know what you're doing, and never trust anyone to do the dirty work for you. And if you fail once, never think that you'll be a failure forever.
What are your goals for Glamour Studio in the future?
I just really want to reach more women. I have started to expand outside Metro Manila, and I see myself reaching out even more. We also have plans on doing our very first stand alone boutique soon and maybe also our own E-commerce site to be able to engage with our customers even more. I can go on and on about our future plans, but I think I'd like to keep the others a secret for now. You just have to wait and see.
