NYX Professional Makeup hosted a Live Makeup Session for Halloween where we met Ms. Karen Yiu, a professional and award-winning makeup artist from Hong Kong who specializes in fashion, editorial and bridal makeup as well as body painting.
As she completed a comic book superhero Halloween look on her model, she shared with us how she loves to do makeup efficiently but quickly especially during fashion shows when she's pressed for time.
Though she usually works in photography studios and runways, we thought her makeup hacks would also be applicable for a college student who's always on the go but still wants to look fab. So, we approached her after the session for more makeup tips she had for busy bodies, and here's what we learned:
Personally, Yiu applies her eyeliner and eye shadow with a mirror placed on the same level as her face as she has a monolid. This way, she will be able to gauge the thickness of her eyeliner and just how high her eye shadow should go to be able to make her eyes seem bigger.
However, as with other professional makeup artists, she recommends that the mirror be placed lower so you should be facing downwards. This way, you will be able to see your whole eyelid which will make it easier to apply your eye makeup.
Yiu also understands how important eyebrows are even to simple college girls. "I recommend using brow powder over gel or pencil to fill up your eyebrows," she advises. "You're going to class so you will want a more natural finish."
In order to achieve symmetrical brows easily, Yiu fills out the inner halves of both brows before doing the arch and the tail. This way, it is easier to match the angle of the eyebrows.
"Lip liners are so important," she explains. "Good lip liners not only make it easier to apply lipstick but also keep the edges from bleeding after talking too much."
The trick is to trace or apply lipstick a millimeter or two over the edges of your lips to achieve fuller-looking lips. Apply lipstick properly, and you won't need any surgery for a to-die-for pout.
When it comes to applying concealer, Yiu believes that less is more. You can get the most out of the least as long as you stick to what she calls "The Golden Triangle." Take a small amount of concealer and apply it below your eyes, bring it down a bit from the innermost corner of your eye to the level of the nose and form a triangle by connecting it to the outer corner.
Highlighting is also an essential part of your everyday look. After a whole night of cramming and only three hours of sleep, it's the only way you can keep your face from looking dull.
"There are two types of highlighters," Yiu says as she reaches for two products. "There's this shiny and glittery one which you use for strobing to achieve more dramatic looks. And then, there's the matte type which you can use every day."
Yiu recommends a light application on the cheek bones to help create a three-dimensional look to help your features pop out for when you or your squad feel like taking a selfie.
There is no one formula that will help everyone magically transform into their ideal look but hopefully these makeup tips will be help you achieve your perfect every day face!
