Remember when we used to celebrate the Filipino language for only a week? Then it became a full month in 1997 courtesy of President Fidel Ramos. Buwan Ng Wika has since been one of the most anticipated in the school calendar, pulling us out of our poor Filipino (as in the subject in class) rut and onto the stage speaking Balagtas and joining Sabayang Pagbigkas.

The Philippines has been one of the largest English-proficient countries, and speaking it both in business and everyday life has made it a huge advantage over other Asian nations. (In fact, when it comes to the academe, foreigners fly to the country for its cheap but supposedly quality English-as-a-Second-Language programs!) But while it’s beneficial to be learned in English as we become more competitive globally, every Filipino should feel guilty neglecting his/her native tongue. This should never be the case, though!
