After weeks of anticipation, Maureen Wroblewitz won Cycle 5 of Asia’s Next Top Model, making her the first ever Filipina contestant to take home the title. The 19-year-old Filipina-German faced tough competition against 14 other girls, and at one point was the subject of bullying in the show. Regardless, Maureen was determined to bring home the victory to Philippines and soldiered on to the end.
“I’m so happy that I could make [Philippine fans’] dream come true.” says Maureen, thinking of all the Filipino viewers who eagerly watched every season in the hopes of a Pinay top model finish. As the last Filipino contestant in the competition, she felt the pressure culminate up to the very end. “I really [had] to give it my all, because I really wanted to win this for the Philippines.”
Dubbed as the “pretty face with no skill” by her rivals, Maureen’s victory has given fans the ultimate satisfaction of a "sweet revenge". For local fans, it was a classic case of Filipino resilience and strength—something Maureen strived to uphold.
“I was really trying to be the strong, proud Filipina,” says Maureen, in describing the imagery of her last photoshoot. Having learned all about her heritage from her mother, there is no question that the Philippines has and always will be part of her identity. “[I] am proud to be a Filipina, and I wanted to show that to everyone.”
In the end, Maureen feels incredible gratitude to her supportive fans, all of whom played a big part in boosting her confidence throughout the competition. “I just want to thank you all so much. Also, thank you for accepting me as the last representative of the Philippines,” smiles Maureen, in a message to her fans. “I really didn’t expect this amount of support, and I just want to thank everyone so much for all the messages, the cheering for me. I’m really, really thankful for that, and it means a lot.”
