It’s been exactly 119 years since our independence from our three century-long Spanish colonizers, around 72 years since we made it through Japanese oppressors in the Second World War, and more than 31 years since we shooed a dictator away from public office. Looking at the numbers gives any Filipino an instant sense of pride, having enjoyed our democracy and identity as a culturally-rich nation.
No other day in history do we celebrate our sense of nationalism more passionately than every June 12th of the year. Living in the age of social media—a hundred and more years since we attained independence, have we come to forget? How much do we really know about our identity with globalization and technology marring what’s left of our patriotism? In line with Independence Day, we ambushed some Pinoys in the street and quizzed them a little on their knowledge of what makes us who we are!
