Top hallyu star and South Korea’s most bankable and highest paid actor Kim Soo Hyun recently paid the Philippines a surprise visit which caused quite a stir among K-drama fans in the country. Just a day after Samsung Philippines posted a teaser on Facebook about a top star visiting the country, all clues pointed to Kim Soo Hyun. Fans were hopeful and excited but no confirmation has been made until the next day when the Korean heartthrob was spotted at NAIA. Since then, fans have been scrambling to find out when and where to get a glimpse of the well-loved Oppa.
Even former PBB housemate and Kim Soo Hyun lookalike Richard Juan panicked.
It turns out Kim Soo Hyun was in the country as the celebrity ambassador of Samsung QLED TV and as the VIP guest for its launch. During his brief appearance, we found out that this isn’t the Korean actor’s first time in the Philippines. Through an interpreter, he said: “I came here (to) the Philippines when I was young and now I have this opportunity to be here for the event. Since I’ve arrived at the airport, everyone was very welcoming. Thank you for your love and support.”
The press event also showcased teasers, a collaboration with Samsung QLED TV, from his upcoming action film Real.
In a Lee Min Ho-dominated country like ours, some are still wondering what the big fuss was all about when Kim Soo Hyun arrived. Two reasons: He’s the highest paid actor in Korea and, despite not being active on TV these days, he holds the record for having the most number of endorsements among Korean celebrities. He set new record with 35 CF (commercial films) deals in 2014 alone.
Let ABS-CBN Lifestyle take you through Kim Soo Hyun’s most memorable projects that propelled him to Pan-Asian and global stardom! Binge-watch these Kim Soo Hyun TV shows and movies with Samsung QLED TV’s Quantum Dot Technology which enables a display of colors as they are in the real world.
Dream High. Song Sam Dong, a country boy who’s also a musical genius, is considered as Kim Soo Hyun’s breakout role. The audience was enamored that on top of being a good actor, Soo Hyun can also sing. He’s also the lone cast member of Dream High who isn’t a K-Pop Idol. His co-stars included top singers like Miss A’s Suzy, IU, and 2 AM’s OK Taecyeon.
Moon Embracing the Sun. His turn as the young king Lee Hwon in this historical drama further cemented his popularity in Korea. The series set record highs when it came to viewership ratings reaching 42.4% in AGB Nielsen nationwide and 48.1% in real-time ratings.
Secretly, Greatly. Proving he’s not just a pretty face, Kim Soo Hyun tackled the role of a North Korean spy pretending as the neighborhood mentally challenged man. The film broke box office records for most ticket sales in its first day of release by a Korean film.
My Love from the Star. They say that the hallyu wave can be defined in two phases: before and after My Love from the Star. It is the show that contributed to Kim Soo Hyun’s feverish rise to fame not just in Korea but also in China, Southeast Asia and basically the whole world. He played the role of Do Min Joon, a 400-year-old alien stuck on earth who fell in love with a self-centered actress played by top Korean star Jun Ji Hyun.
The Producers. Breaking away from his heartthrob status, Kim Soo Hyun took on the role of naïve rookie TV producer Baek Seung Chan. Far from his sophisticated and confident alien role from My Love from the Star, Kim Soo Hyun effectively essayed the comedic role of an awkward and shy workplace newbie.
Real. Set to be shown this June 2017 in Korea, we’ll see Kim Soo Hyun in this action film noir this time as a troubleshooter in the criminal world. Enjoy watching the trailer for now in high quality on Samsung QLED TV.
