When it comes to #bodygoals, Solenn Heusaff-Bolzico has constantly been the ultimate standard. With her rock-solid commitment to eating healthy, it is little wonder that she was chosen to be the Nutrition ambassador of Philam Life's 'Live Better' campaign, which aims to inspire Filipino to be the best version of themselves.
Eating healthy can not only help your body function at its peak, it can also have a profound effect on your mood and sense of wellbeing. By using Solenn's simple, practical tips, you can cut through the confusion and learn how to master a nutrition program that is as good for your mind as it is for your body.
Use mind games when it comes to eating healthy. Psychological warfare might just be the ticket to sticking to a nutrition program. "Eat on a smaller plate," advises Solenn. "This way, your plate looks fuller, tricking your mind into believing that you are eating a lot."
Say no to second servings. Chances are, your first helping was already more than adequate to satisfy your calorie requirements. "Figure out a reasonable portion of food that is within reason but not so skimpy that you’re nowhere near satisfied when you’re finished," relates Solenn. "You're usually not hungry anymore after your first plate. The second helping is more to satisfy your emotional need."
Hydrate adequately. Water helps ensure that you're not hungrier than you should be. "Drink two glasses of water before every meal," says Solenn. "You'll tend to eat less and slower because you're half full already."
Find a good balance. Eating a variety of foods from each of the five food groups daily, in the recommended amounts gives your body the nutrients it needs to function well. "Some people think that because they're dieting, they should eat only fruits," reveals Solenn. She adds that this is a mistake, as fruits are high in sugar which then converts into fat if not burned. Having a little of everything helps you keep things proportioned.
Stop making excuses. Make the effort to select the right kind of food to eat, even if it's inconvenient. "Never say that you can't do it and you don't have time. If you're on Instagram, you definitely have time," laughs Solenn.
