Dating a musician seems like a thing that most teenagers wish to experience because, honestly, who hasn't had that fantasy of dating the badass lead singer of their favorite band or the sensitive singer-songwriter? I know because I used to wish I'd date one when I was in high school, little did I know that I'd actually end up being in a relationship with a musician when I grow up.
As awesome as it is to date one, you've got to know that it doesn't play out like you see in the movies. In fact, it'll be one of the toughest things ever, considering their abnormal schedules and their creative mood swings. However, in my case, I can say that dating a musician has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Aside from those private little concerts that you get to see exclusively before everyone else, you're definitely in for a fun, crazy adventure!
If you're dreaming of dating a musician or you're simply curious to know what it's like dating one, here's a lowdown of some of the most amazing (and not-so-amazing) things that happen when you date a musician:
Reharsals come first. Improving their craft usually comes before anything else. It doesn't mean that he loves you any less—it's just the reality of their lives. That's why it's very important for them to get a gal who understands this and have a partner who's willing and ready to accept and understand the demands of their profession.
They're like a walking jukebox. He has a song that he can relate to with almost every phrase, so don't be suprised if he'll just burst out singing a random song mid-conversation—it's involuntary! In time, you'll just find yourself doing the same thing, too. It's really quite contagious.
They're usually late for dates. Because rehearsals and shows don't usually start and end on time, he usually comes an hour late for a date. This might make you upset for the first few months of your relationship, but you'll eventually understand the nature of his job and find yourself mastering the art of adjusting to the erratic schedules.
Nothing means more to them than your moral support. Believe me when I tell you that it means the world to them when you come to their shows and watch their performances, compliment them about their music, and just fangirl. Your support and understanding play a crucial role in your relationship more than you can ever imagine.
You can't sing out loud without growing conscious. Whether or not your boyfriend is a lead vocalist, guitarist, or any other instrument player, singing in front of him will make you uneasy. Since he appreciates music, there's always going to be a tiny part of you that will worry if you're singing the notes correctly—because then you might be ruining his favorite song without you knowing! But, no matter what, be confident in the thought that he will never judge you. He'll even join you in belting out those tunes!
They can easily harmonize with almost anyone. When they hear a random song on the radio and sing along to it, you'll be surprised at how they manage to sing the parts perfectly even if it's their first time hearing the song. Like, how in the world do they do that?!
Scheduling a date can be a struggle. Since musicians tend to work mostly at nights and on weekends, it can be a struggle to meet up with them at times because their work starts after normal waking hours. In order to make your relationship work, be prepared to compromise and sacrifice—just like any other relationship, right?!
Be prepared to share. And by that, we mean share him with his fans. Whether he's already famous or still up and coming, dating any musician means you'll have to deal with starry-eyed fangirls and obsessive groupies at one point in your relationship. When this happens, it'll be hard not to get jealous and possessive—don't! Trust that he only has eyes for you because you're the fan that really matters. Plus, you'll know it when his eyes meet yours while he's playing onstage. Best. Feeling. Ever.
You can count on him to do beautiful personal arrangements of your favorite songs. Among all the perks of having a musician boyfriend, nothing beats having your favorite song rearranged and then played by your favorite person, in dedication to you! It just couldn't get any sweeter than that.
They're the most imaginative and most creative people you'll ever meet. You might not understand it at first, but you just can't help falling in love with the way they chase their dreams, the way they get lost in the music, and the way they fall in love with songs like they're always hearing it for the first time. Musicans have a lot of emotions, and they're the most passionate and devoted individuals you'll come across—making them the best lovers out there! *wink*
Dating a musician has its ups and downs, but one thing's for sure: They will never bore you. Maybe because they can turn on the charm like a switch or attract you with their child-like wonder. Whatever it is, you'll always be a proud partner to their talented ways!
