Most of David Fonacier's childhood was spent as an overweight kid. He started getting into better shape late into high school, not wanting to graduate the same way he came in. During college, David competed more, joining the Ateneo rowing team and competing worldwide. From there for, it was a journey of dabbling in different sports: circuit/interval training, muay thai, and eventually finding and cherishing the CrossFit way of life. This has been his passion for nearly 5 years and he's never looked back since. He's joined three international and seven local CrossFit competitions, with a mix of individual and team divisions, given all his fitness goals, he still loves sweets, coffee, and cheat meals!
How millennial are you and why?
"I’d say very millennial, despite being on the upper limit of millennial age. I’m very active on social media (social networking, current events, nonsense, etc.) most of the time to a fault. I’m into what’s current/modern, whether it’s food, music, trends, technology, etc. I live a very fast-paced lifestyle where multitasking is no longer a skill but an expectation."
How do you counter the myth about millennials being too entitled?
"Working in a high-stress and fast-paced corporate setting will quickly expel any sense of entitlement you may have, assuming you last long enough. And instead of short, I’d say shorter attention span would be appropriate for millenials. Due to the vast amount of information available at an instant, we tend to have shorter attention spans for anything. So, if you want to be remembered or make an impact, make sure you get them hooked in the first few seconds and keep them interested enough to extend that shortened attention span."
How did you get started with using social IG in your projects/advocacies?
"I don’t really have any projects/advocacies. If there were anything remotely close to that, it would be when I started posting #TheFonaWay. It was simply posting cheat meals and I got known for it particularly in the CrossFit community, since everybody loves a good cheat meal after expending all that energy in training."
As a millennial, we’re feeling you still want to have more in life. What else do you dream of doing in the future despite juggling a lot of stuff now?
"I want to be able to travel to as many places around the world as possible. I’ve always enjoyed experiencing different cultures, food, sights, and people. Rather than material things, the experiences and memories of travelling are what I value more."
What was your greatest social media/ online moment like?
"Nothing really “great”, but it was cool when @crossfitgames, the official IG account of CrossFit, reposted one of my posts from a team workout we did for a CrossFit event."
What do you think is your most ‘exciting’ post? Which one receives the most likes?
"Most exciting would probably be the ones I posted when I watched the 2016 CrossFit Games live in Califronia. Being able to experience the most elite competition live and meet our favorite athletes were great highlights. Usually the posts that get the most likes are either posts of food abroad or Crossfit-related videos (weightlifting, gymnastics, or just fooling around in the box)."
If you were to create your own hashtag, what would that be and why?
"I actually already have one: #TheFonaWay. It was made by my friends when we started out CrossFit, making fun of how I eat too many sweets, no vegetables, but still stay competitive in CrossFit. It’s now used for posts on 'cheat meals' mostly involving sweets, protein, or any dirty vulgar delicious food."
What are your mid-summer plans?
"Keep training for the next season of CrossFit and go to the beach as often as possible. Gotta work on the tan!"
Any dream destination and why?
"Later this year, I’ll be going to Italy for the first time so I’m excited for that. But for the summer in particular, just going back to the local beaches like La Union and Batangas."
Ideal summer escapade and why?
"Just being in the beach with good friends. I love being at the beach. Lying under the sun, hearing the waves crashing on the sand, with a drink in hand, is the ideal relaxing summer escapade for me."
Ideal summer date and why?
"Still the beach for the same reasons mentioned above."
How do you maintain your bod during the summer?
"Primarily, by maintaining my training. Our training is quite intense all year round, just having different cycles working on different things. A few months would be spent focusing on heavy lifting with some endurance work, then the next cycle would lean more towards long endurance sessions while maintaining strength work, and so on. It’s all about changing it up to avoid burning out and putting too much wear and tear on your body."
"I like classic CrossFit workouts that have a combination of moderate-weight barbell work and gymnastics. I prefer the ones that keep you constantly moving across different movements as opposed to those with high rep schemes before moving on to the next one. As for favorite movements, I like cleans, snatches, pull-ups, muscle-ups, handstand pushups, and rowing."
Most recommended diet?
"#TheFonaWay! I don’t know how people would take this as it goes against everything any health buff or nutritionist would say, but it’s what I’m known for and what I enjoy. It’s not a diet, it’s more of a reward-system where you just eat whatever you want as a reward for a hard day’s work in the gym. The famous term 'cheat meal' would be the perfect description for this. Whenever you see #TheFonaWay, do not expect to see some healthy organic non-GMO green dish with minimal calories, regardless of how good they’re claiming it to be."
Your most effective gwapo trick?
"The 'hair floof!' At least when my hair is grown out and thick enough that I have enough to floof it. Thick curly hair needs some floofing every once in a while. Always couple with a smile!"
Your most effective trick to get the girl?
"The trick is finding the girl you don’t need tricks for. That’s a girl not just worth getting, but keeping."
