Carlos Benipayo loves good, healthy food and his nutri-food business Oscar’s Deli is a testament of how serious he has gone about it. Good-looking, fit, charming, and down-to-earth, he makes the perfect mascot for his young businesses (online diet delivery shop Oscar's Deli, and coffee shop Coffee and Protein). He lends us more insights on the fitness revoluton he has been leading!
How millennial are you and why?
"I’d like to believe I am as millennial as it gets. Through my parents' patience and understanding, I was able to start a business straight from school without having to work in an official capacity. In other ways, I am also a big believer in how everyone is special and how everyone can change the world."
How do you counter the myth about millennials being too entitled in life?
"To begin with, I think that this myth comes with the territory. This is simply how we were affected by our environment growing up. The tech boom in the 90s, globalization/awareness, our parents whom in turn had their own times of hardship that they didn’t want us millennials to experience, etc. So, to answer this question, I believe that the best way to counter this would be to put our money where our mouths are. We just have to keep putting out positive acts despite our generation’s idiosyncrasies. We grew up as the Internet blew up. We are blessed with the entirety of human information in our hands. This is why we seem overly righteous and annoying. But there is nothing wrong in being virtuous or knowledgable so long as we are prudent in our thoughts and acts."
How did you get started with using social IG in your projects/advocacies?
"My first non-personal social media account is for my first business, Oscar’s Deli. It being an online food delivery service, the need to make use of social media was obvious. I needed to build a business around it. My second non-personal account is also for Oscar’s Deli, but its purpose was to personify the owner of the Deli, who is Oscar, who is also me! Yay! So that was easy enough. I came up with Oscar’s Fitness where I would post my natural day-to-day encounters with food and working out. I felt that making Oscar of Oscar’s Deli alive would create a more personal touch between the customer and the Deli brand. My third non-personal social media account is for a business I co-founded, Coffee & Protein. At this point in my experience, social media was an all too obvious tool to supplement any business with."
As a millennial, we’re feeling you still want to have more in life. What else do you dream of doing in the future despite juggling a lot of stuff now?
"The general dream is to keep helping people with their nutrition goals. Everything that I am doing now and in the future are to achieve this dream and make sure it perpetuates."
How meticulous are you with your posts? Describe your process.
"My non-personal posts have a general theme behind them based on the brand. I consider tone of voice, captioning style, among others."
What was your greatest social media/ online moment like?
"I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever people I don’t know message me to tell me how thankful they are for having inspired them into creating a better lifestyle, whether it’s fitness/nutriton-related or just doing that one thing that makes you feel alive."
What do you think is your most ‘exciting’ post? Which one receives the most likes?
"The most engaging posts are the ones that are fitness-related, whether it’s on Oscar’s Fitness or my personal account. More specifically, the ones where I am not as clothed. Ha ha! But I don’t mind this at all since this too comes with the territory of promoting the whole nutrition/fitness lifestyle."
If you were to create your own hashtag, what would that be and why? "#NutritionRevolution all the way!"
What are your mid-summer plans?
"My mid-summer plans are to have short trips out of town with family and friends here and there. I don’t think I’m experienced enough just yet to leave my work on its own for more than a few days."
Any dream destination and why?
"None specifically, but anywhere I haven’t been to yet. Discovering new things is always a good experience."
Ideal summer escapade and why?
"No particular summer escapade as well, but anywhere with a gym nearby is good for me. When it comes to freeing my mind and letting the stress go away, there is no place like the gym. And this works well on its own. What more if it’s part of your summer escapade!"
Ideal summer date and why?
"My ideal summer date would go something like this: wake up somewhere out of town in the morning. Gym session in. Breakfast buffet. Get one or two hours of work in (since we can’t move around from all the food anyway). Explore this area out of town the rest of the afternoon. A good dinner. Chill for the rest of the night on a balcony, rooftop, or wherever you can hear the sound of nature and your music from your speaker mix together. Then finally sleep at night from being tired like crazy, but as peaceful as a baby."
How do you maintain your bod during the summer?
"Generally, I just need to clock in on my workouts and keep the nutrition in control."
Most recommended diet?
"Anything that propagates flexible dieting / IIFYM (if it fits your macros) protocols."
Your most effective gwapo trick?
"Be yourself. Someone who truly likes you will like you for you and that’s all that matters."
Your most effective trick to get the girl?
"If you act naturally, chances are you’ll stumble upon your own set of 'dad jokes.' And the dad jokes always work."
