It’s been a month since Ed Sheeran released his third album ÷, but the album is already on our permanent playlist—a testament of just how awesome it is. Whether you're in the mood for wistful, heartbreaking ballads or catchy and upbeat anthems, Ed Sheeran covers it all in this record.
While his first single Shape of You is a heavy, beat-infused track, the rest of the album still highlights what 'Sheerios' love about Sheeran—him and his guitar, plus his swoon-worthy lyrics. With the way he paints a picture and conveys scenes with his verses, there's no doubt that Sheeran is the kind of guy who's not afraid to put his heart on his sleeve. So whether you're looking for a good cry, or just want to wrap yourself in a blanket of emotions, here are five feels-inducing songs from his latest offering:
Musically, it's one of the prettiest songs in the album—it's easy on the ears and tugs at the heartstrings, but once you hear the lyrics, you'll feel your heart breaking for Sheeran, who sings about the "one that got away." BRB, sobbing.
“'Cause baby you look happier, you do
My friends told me one day I'll feel it too
And until then I'll smile to hide the truth
But I know I was happier with you”
At 22, the singer-songwriter has proven that he can nail love songs every. Single. Time. Sometimes we hate Sheeran for writing lyrics that make us set unbelievably high standards for men, but here he goes again with a song that doesn't just make you want to fall in love, it makes you want to fall in love with someone perfect.
“Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know and
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I'll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own”
3. What Do I Know
This song is a reminder of what it really means to live a life that matters—and Sheeran proves that you don’t have to conform to society standards in order to achieve that. Because in the end, what would really matter is how well you’ve loved and made the world a better place.
“I'll paint the picture, let me set the scene
I know, I'm all for people following their dreams
Just remember life is more than fitten' in your jeans
It's love and understanding, positivity”
4. Save Myself
Just like any other human being, Sheeran encounters tough days that are sometimes too much to handle. But he makes a point in this track—when that happens, you need to be able to pick yourself up before you can help anyone else—something that most people, especially those who are going through difficult times, need to hear.
“Life can get you down so I just numb the way it feels
I'll drown it with a drink and out of date prescription pills
And all the ones that love me they just left me on the shelf, no farewell
So before I save someone else, I've got to save myself
And before I blame someone else, I've got to save myself”
5. Supermarket Flowers
We always appreciate Ed's love songs, but we also love the fact that he doesn't just pen typical love and relationships tracks. He writes about love in all forms—just like this song where he bids farewell to his beloved grandma. It's honestly one of the sweetest and most heartbreaking song in the album, and we can't help but tear up every time we listen to it! Sniff.
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
