Films that tackle falling in love with your best friend are a dime a dozen—but such a story that's done with so much heart, and beautifully featuring what many would consider a taboo topic, LGBT relationships, is a rare gem. And that, exactly, is what the Jasmine Curtis-starrer Baka Bukas is.
The Cinema One Originals entry on the story of Alex (Jasmine Curtis) falling in love with her best friend Jess (Louise Delos Reyes) was one of the most talked-about indie movies last year. Besides the fact that it was on point in discussing same-sex love, the film was also Jasmine’s first time to do an on-screen kiss, with a girl.
"Sobrang okay lang sa tao kapag ang babae at lalaki maghalikan. Pero kapag dalawang babae, ang dami pa ring nagsasabi na ang laswa naman, ang pangit," Jasmine explained in an interview with Star Cinema. "Love is love. There are no boundaries of gender in love.”
With the awards Baka Bukas bagged at Cinema One Originals 2016, including Best Actress (for Jasmine), Audience Choice, and Best Sound, there's no doubt it's a film you just gotta catch. The good news? Starting March 1, Baka Bukas will be shown in major cinemas!
“A movie like this, characters like Alex, Jess, Kate, David, and Julo—and straight actors that accept gay roles, can really help make the struggle a little easier for LGBTQ community,” critic Lala Arroyo said in her review.
Even better: It was given a family-friendly PG rating!
